Mr2 in distress....

Hey guys, this here is my 1990 Mr2 Turbo.

Stock everything except short shifter kit, pod filter and megasonic bov.
Bought it couple months back, only drove it a couple days and then i was on the motor way one day, and was about to pass a car so i floored it in 4th. and it was making a loud sound as if something was wrong with the wastegate, and gave a weak pull. i was with my friend at the time who suggested it had a boost leak.

So i left her to sit for a few days then took her to the mechs. He tested it, revved it a bit and after a couple revs it died, he restarted it and tried again, apparently one of the leads/sparks were faulty so he changed them with one he had. then did the revvs again to test it but after a couple more times a slight knocking/slapping sound came up. theres no sound at idle only at certain revs, and in the video you will see i didnt turn the car off after i let of the gas she just died. But im a carefull guy i brought it home and havent driven it since, and only did a video about it recently which you can see. and hear the problem.

I mean few people say bearings, but if it was the car would sound shit, but as you can hear it sound pretty good untill the sound comes in. And i dont wanna take it to the mechs untill i know the problem. Because it could be something small but hell just do a complete rebuild. Which is good but times are hard for everyone, dont wanna rebuild it if i dont HAVE to.

I will apprecaite any input you guys can give.
Thanks

first off you are running a stock AFM with a non recirculated BOV. That will cause that bogging down problem easily. As far as the noise you are talking about it is hard to tell from the video what you are talking about or where it is comming from. But i suggest you either go back to the stock BOV or replace that with one you can recirculate.

hmm. i got the car like that. it was owned my a friend of mine before me, and i saw with the same bov never gave problems. how ever maybe its a thing that built up??

and is it possible its happening because the bov is loose? coz its got some play in it, just a little

Could have a leak. Most of the aftermarket BOV's have springs that eventually wear out. Unlike the stock BOV that uses a much more responsive diaphram.
A possibility.
I would try as suggested above. Put the stock one back on and see if it makes a difference.

so what if i just replace the spring, which would be cheaper and easier.
ill do that.

also i think if you listen to the noise properly (turn your speakers up) you will hear the amount of knocking/slapping sound there is. its almost like a bearing but its not bad so i dobut it.

Before you start replacing parts, I would do as TheEngineer suggested and put the stock BOV on and see if that solves the problem.

I have a kick ass stereo that i turned way up, and that really really really sounded like a bad rod bearing. I had a car that was non-turbo that had the same type of knock. the other alt. would be a bad wrist pin.

If it is one of those DON'T drive it! It's a quick way to ruin a block!

to MR2Jedi - ive been trying to find a stock bov, its hard. i even offered a ad to swap my mega sonic one for a stock one for free. but its really hard to find.

to NoHonduhs - yea i have a bad feeling it is a bearing. but its kinda annoying coz this car hasnt been thrashed much "apparently" and is on reasonably low kms, only 121,000. but if its a rod bearing, what kind of repairs am i looking for?

If thats what it is, and it doesn't sound like it to me IMO, the crankshaft will have to be removed , then checked and the proper bearings installed.

take heater hose or some other type of hose, hoseclamp it to the out let of the BOV and run said hose it back to the intake where the stock recirc valve would dump the air, which is POST- afm in the intake. or is this a dumb idea?

The way the stock recirc valve routes air is past the afm, so if you are dumping this air to the atmosphere, the car is going to run rich until all of the pressure is relieved, because the motor isnt seeing the air however it expects it to be there.

so this will muffle the rice BOV sound somewhat and allow your car to run correctly for once.

hey sorry guys been away for a bit. Was job hunting. The mr2 is still sitting at home. Now i have some income coming in, she is gonna go to the mechs. most likely in a week or 2.

So heres what ive found out so far from here and youtube.

1. Change the BOV and it should fix the problem of bogging out. (apparently many mr2s exp this)
2. Its most likely bearings.
3. Swap the ct26 for a ct20b =P.

Oh and btw Apokryphos

can you explain it in a more simple way hahaha im not a mechie. i could care less what the bov sounds like anyway.
