Engine fit now emissions screwed!

Hey there i have an mr2 Mk1. The previous owner stripped the engine down to repair the head gasket but decided to strip it all and leave it with the engine hatch open in the rain...for nearly 2 years!!! . So i aquired the car for free etc, gt myself a new engine and here we are...have just had an engine fitted to it...good news...IT RUNS!! SO halfway to winning the battle....HOWEVER...nothings been simple with this mr2 and the guy fitting it has run into a problem...hopefully you guys can share the knowledge and help a guy out

Right the emissions im told for the mr2 are allowed to be around 4%...they are however 9%! There is a lead on the engine and the guy fitting it doesnt know why. He says it could be for some kind of sensor or something to do with the emmissions. There is also an engine management light on as well as the extremely high emmissions. Does anyone have anyidea of what this could be? If anyone does then GREAT! If you think hmmm i think i do but id have to see it then let me know and i'll take a drive down there and snap a few pictures of it and further seek your guidance!

Appreciate any replies to this...anyone with an mr2 knows how desperate i am to get on the road with this...especially as a first car well thanks all and hope to hear from someone!!

Danny

what year is it..?

if it's an 85, and you have an 85 4ag in there, then i think you have some sort of exemption...

The check engine light being on means that you have a problem somewhere, pull out the codes and see what you are getting. If you dont know how to do this I would suggest you buy the service manual as this will help you alot or you can search on the net to find out about it, good luck and enjoy the 2!

Im engine iliterate...its the guy actually fitting it that called me and asked are there any bits i didnt give him (from when the previous owner stripped it) because he thinks theres a missing part..this didnt exactly fill me with confidence when he said..."theres a lead coming out and i have nowhere to put it"...but ANYWAYYYYYYYY i just didnt know if there was some kind of "unit" that controlled emmisions that the plug would go into..whether thats what is missing.
