Hi everyone!

I'm totally new to this forum so forgive me if Im asking a stupid question I'm 20 and just started last year to have a passion for race cars and all that fun stuff.. I recently decided that I wanna buy an MR2 and my bf and all his friends (who are part of a racing team) suggested me to get one with high mileage (cuz they are usually cheaper) and then throw a new Japanese engine in it. My question is.. for engine swaps is it better to get a TURBO one or an NA? What would the difference be (I'm assuming the installation might be more expensive if done to an NA, but I could be wrong)?

Please let me know, so that I can start looking for a car!

Thanks a bunch - Jade ^_^

Welcome to TN, Jade!! Now I need my other hand when counting the number of female members.

Even if you're going to do a swap, you should still get the turbo version. That will cut down on the headaches of connecting wires to the ECU, etc. as the NA and turbo engines are different and use different wiring harnesses. Also, intercoolers and other stuff from the old one may not need swapping.

You will be extremely fortunate to land a Jap-spec MR2 3SGTE engine. To many Toyota-heads like us, that's the engine of choice for engine swap.

Lastly, and totally off topic, ToyotaNation members have a tendency of flooding a thread when there is a new female member. I'm predicitng at least 5 pages for this one.

get a turbo one. so you don't have to go thru the trouble of swapping over harnesses and stuff, pure headaches.

jeff is right female members get so spammed her, don't let that bother you tho, SOME of us are useful.

I dunno if this applies to the SW20, but the differnce between the AW11 SC and the NA version lies in more than just a different engine.

read this somewhere on the net before, i forgot where, so pardon me..but the difference in the AW11 is that the SC ones usually have a stronger car..not just the engine, but some of the components in the chassis as well..

so if you are gonna go boost anyway, just get a high mileage one with the 3sgte instead of the NA.

someone correct me before i go on with this misinfo if that's really teh case
thanks

I've had an '88 n/a (Mark I)and now have a '91 n/a (Mark II) and can tell you that, if you're looking for a street car, go supercharged or turbo if you can find one. If you're going to go into racing, though, you may want to see what class you'd be in. I'm not real sure, but I think SCCA Autocross has the MK II n/a in one class and the turbo in another; probably the same thing (two different classes) for the MK I as well. I understand that the MK I n/a is very competitive in whatever class it runs. I seem to see a lot of photos of MK I n/a's in road rallies as well, and they seem to do well. The new MR2 Spyders are doing very, very well in B Stock Solo II from what I understand -Grassroots Motorsports can provide more details. Good luck in whatever you can find.

3SGTE!!! turbo the mk2 but is alot nicer if u can find urself a lower more taken cared of mr2 turbo one reason high milers may have some body problems as well.. why not go for a decent one and fix that up that should lower ur costs altogether in my opinion plus the headache of lookin for parts and missing this and thats... just my opinion btw welcome to the board...

SBC : my guess is 3 pages cos she said she has a bf already hehehehehe less flooding!!!!
