HELP Mr2 Clutch Issue.

Okay I just bought a 92 Toyota Mr2 3sgte turbo. The problem with the car is that it stalls out when you push the clutch in. This is NOT a vaccum leak it is 100% clutch related. He said that he JUST got the clutch done and it has been happening ever since.

When the engine is cold and in neutral you can push the clutch in and the Rpm's bog down. The clutch also disengages right off the floor and is very very fast / rough engagement. When the motor is warmed up the problem is so bad that even in neutral, you push the clutch in it causes the car to stall. There is a noise when you push the clutch in, but it's not overly loud, like not a noise of a release bearing seizing or that has been seized. The car runs 100% fine otherwise. With no problems, you can cruise around in any gear with the clutch out and it drives like a new car, the minute you push the clutch it wants to stall and die. The transmission also shifts like a bag of garbage most likely because of the same issue related to the stalling.

Now it sounds like 1 of 2 things to me.

1. Seized / seizing release bearing, hard to believe because it's not that loud and when it's cold you can barely hear it even engaging.

2. The clutch plate was installed backwards with the springs for the clutch facing into the flywheel and not into the pressure plate.

Any advice?

Did it get a new release bearing in the clutch job?
Was the retainer clip installed properly?
I was gonna say the clutch disk may be in backwards. But it sounds like thats been checked out.
Have you checked to see that when the clutch is depressed, that the slave is moving the proper amount of travel?
If so, I think you're gonna need to pull the trans and visually check the clutch and all it's components.

it sounds to me that logically it could only be the throwout bearing. It is entirely possible it was installed backwards or if you got a cheap kit, that it just siezed like you already suggested. Like Russ said you will have split the tranny/engine and visually inspect.

If the car starts to move as you just start to release the pedal, then you need to adjust the pedal height underneith the dash. This will allow better take off, and less reving of the engine.

If the clutch plate was installed backwards, I wouldn't think the car would even start. The reason I say this, is because the Engine flywheel would bined against the springs, samething if you don't correctly alighn the clutch plate. But anything is possible.

If you here a noise, like a slight scraping noise, but not loud. It could be that the
Throwout bearing came loose from the spring connected to the fork. Also the clutch plate splines could be warn and making noise. Three, the Pressure plate and flywheel could be warped if chattering,or vibrating.

rattling, or clicking noises: Check the fork shaft to see if properly installed. clutch plate dampener failure. low engine idle speed.

Just a few idea's for you.
