Canada 1986 MR2 Should I sell?

I have a 1986 MR2 - red with a removable sunroof - it has a new engine, new fuel pump, lots of other new stuff too as I have owned it since 1996. The previous owner had wired the car to be a boombox, but removed the extra speakers before selling. It now needs a new catalytic converter, brakes and some work on the gas tank as the service tech who replaced the fuel filter did something wrong and it has smelled of gas ever since - they tell me it isn't their fault! My husband says it isn't worth sinking more money into it, but I am not sure - should I sell it or not? If I sell, what is it worth?

It all boils down to whether it's worth it to you. The car is coming up on 25yrs old. It will always need attention.
Personally, I think they are a collectors car. A true sports car in every sense of the term.
I will keep mine until I die! Even if I have to rebuild it a 100 times.
If you have a 2nd dependable daily driver, i would keep it.

But to answer your question of value, in good condition, it's worth between $1,000.00-$1500.00.Alittle more , if it's Supercharged

I noticed you are in Canada. All my prices are based on USD.

The fuel smell is probably because of an emmisions hose that was not hooked back up (sometimes difficult to get to, and people overlook it). Or one of the lines were hooked up backwards. Both are easy fixes.

Depending on if you need rotors or not, brakes for all 4 wheels can cost anywhere between $60-180. Again, if you need rotors. I suggest you check out www.rockauto.com . They generally have Brand-name parts that are 30-40% cheaper then your local auto parts store and have great customer service.

And for the catalytic converter. You can just get a 2" OD universal 3 way catalytic converter. Magnaflow makes a nice one that is only $60! And if you get the Universal catalytic converter, all you have to do is take it down to any muffler shop and ask them to install it.

If you go to the right mechanic..everything you have above could be done for $400-500. If you know someone personally that is handy with cars, things like the brakes can be done even cheaper.

And by the way Russ, supercharged wasnt offered until 1987

What you are saying is in need of attention is certainly no big deal. Find a mechanic that knows these cars (they are not that hard to troubleshoot and fix!). You will never find a better little old sports car assuming it has been taken care of and is not rusty. Mr2 Mk1's are simply "a poor man's Lotus" and few old sports cars can put a grin on your face like a Mk1. I suggest you start hanging out on the Mr2OCForum. It is THE PLACE for ALL THINGS Mr2 Mk1 related! It's a TERRIFIC site and TONS of Help! Fix it and KEEP IT! and drive it like you stole it....they run better that way.
