Sad day for this mr2 owner

I had a 89 sc mr2 in which I just sold. Sigh. But I did pick up a 91 turbo still a sad day. It needs some work. I maybe taking it to a mechanic to get it looked at but who knows it kinda acts like there is a mount broken motor or trans. It runs good kinda loud boost lags sometimes worse than other times. Any ideas. When I got it boost was cranked up to 16 I turned it down to 8 psi. Could use a new clutch I think the throughout bearing is shot.

Its not all bad. You should look into trying to fix a few things yourself, I see to many MR2 owners fail because they trust thier cars with thier mechanics who end up charging a whole lot of money and run you broke. (They justify it by saying the MR design makes it difficult to work on which is BS, no harder then a Camry or Corolla).

Go to MR2oc.com and use the search feature. Look for "BGB" or "service manual" for SW20/SW21. If you follow those manuals step by step you should be able to do alot of maintenence yourself.

As for the boost leak, check all the couplers and make sure they are not leaking, also make sure your Blow off Valve is closed when running and not leaking. Take the piping off you intercooler and shine a flashlight in there and see if you can see any oil or buildup. Sometimes those factory A2A intercoolers can get gunked up and cause issues. Any large traces of oil could also mean a bad seal on your turbo.

The fact it was turned up so high on the boost worries me..it could have damaged the turbo.

Thanks for your reply. I went to mr2oc and looked for the service manual and bgb couldnt find anything. I did try from my phone could be why. As for the other stuff. I'm going to look in the intercooler when I get off work. Any ideas on where I could get motor mounts for it? When I shift from 1st to 2nd I have to wait a second or it will grind. Could be the throughout bearing but I don't know. Also the turbo is not the stock turbo. It has been upgraded. Leads me to wonder if anything in the motor has been also. Cams, pistons. I need to get in there with a camera and look around. I haven't found any motor leaks of any kind such as oil. However the rings may be going bad. Smells rich.

I looked inside the intercooler and there is a good amount of oil. What does this mean? The lag I have is from the afm. I want to find a 3rd gen. Motor any ideas where I should buy from. I think I may try and rebuild this motor after I buy one.

It means the oil seal in the turbo is leaking.
If it still has the stock intake, it could also be getting excess oil from the the top of the head(blow by) via the tube coming off the valve cover-or both.

its not a stock turbo? what kind is it

is it running on the stock intercooler?

What else is modified?

sounds like the engine may be fine but that there is just an issue with the setup. Most likely a leak somewhere. and it sounds like that turbo is garbage
