Broken wheel bolt

I was replacing a front wheel on my 03 and, to my shock, broke one of the wheel bolts. I was only using a hand wrench. Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks........

I had an '01. Wasn't a problem.
Did you buy the car new? Or used?

I got it used......I guess I just overtightened it. I thought a wheel bolt would be a lot stronger though. I'm in the process of replacing the bolt now. Thanks......

It's a good bet, that when the previous owner had the wheels removed, for whatever reason, the mechanic stressed the studs over tightening them with an impact wrench.
