Crankshaft Specialists 5S-FE

Just got my block and crank back from Doug at Crankshaft Specialists in TN and thought some of y'all may be interested in seeing the work. I did some research and found that a 98 5S was the best block/crank combo to use for larger displacement.

Here you can see the pretty knife edgeing that was done

notice how flat it is now

and here you can see the offset cut to add stroke

with the bore it should be 2.5 liters now at a total bottom end cost of under $2000 including all shipping and block/crank/custom rod/custom piston/rings and bearings purchase.
Got a similar project going? Give Doug a call and tell him Bill from Savannah sent you.

cool! I would assume after all that crank work everything was balanced together?

You can't techincally balance everything together as you'd have rods and pistons flopping around however it starts with balancing the crank, then the rods then pistons then other rotating/moving parts. Yes it is all balanced including the aluminum flywheel, clutch cover, aluminum crank pulley, cams and timing gears. To save weight aluminum hardware will be used where possible and titanium in many more stressed areas.

Good to see more people modding the 5sfe.

Might want to do your math again. It is not physically possible to get 2.5 liters from a 5sfe block and crank. Even getting 2.3 liters is quite difficult. What are your goals with this motor? Have you picked the rods and pistons you will be using yet?

That's ATS's 2.3 using a 5S bottom and 88mm pistons. I also have custom 88mm pistons but a stroked 5S crank. I did this for considerably less money as well. The machine work and custom parts all balanced cost under $2000 and that includes the 98 block and crank mentioned by ATS.
Their price includes bolting it together for you but honestly on machine work I trust nobody and prefer to do my own plastigauging and priming. STP is all throughout my engines.

Also being honest it won't have an fe head going on. See TAZ in the Starlet section for the complete build. Just like the cartoon figure, we have a tiny monster coming up.

Ok yeah I saw your thread over at MR2OC. Looks like you have offset ground the crank by 1/8" or so. Do you know what your new stroke will be? I am all about DIY engine building. I do all assembly and checking clearances myself too.

Added 4mm stroke to what the 5S crank already had. Once I have all the block hardware I'll post exact numbers.
