Just got a 2001 MR-2 Spyder: Need Reading Material

Ok... So I owned a 1993 Honda Del Sol and was about to do a K20Z1 engine swap on it and then I got into a wreck and it did enough damage to where it just was not worth repairing and then saving up for an engine swap also. I browsed around my local shops and found a MR-2 Spyder and got a good deal on it. The body looks great with a few very minor scrapes. The only interior problems is the leather seats are cracked on the bottom but that is fine. Overall got a really good deal on it.

Now my goal in my Del Sol was to reach 250hp and that has not changed. I would like to do that with this car too. Naturally aspirated though I am not looking for any turbo set up right now, but maybe supercharged way down the line.

It has been hard to find forums or topics on aftermarket modding MR-2s but I did find one article on swaping it out with a K-Series Honda motor and might do that later if I can't find anything else.

Many people put in a 2zz-ge engine that makes 180 hp. There are some people on newcelica.org because they share the 1zz-ge motor.

Besides turbo'ing or supercharging, there's not alot of aftermarket performance parts out there for the 1zz .
There are headers for it, but the stiock exhaust manifold flows quite well.
Cams and and more fuel would be the best way to go, besides the 2zz swap.

250hp NA? you are just past Formula Atlantic range there. 1.6L 240hp @ 11,000rpm.

the 1zzfe is not a powerhouse of an engine. think of it this way, every corolla from 2000+ you see, has that exact engine.

i'm not trying to shatter your dreams. i'm trying to demonstrate that getting a gob of power from that engine would be... difficult and probably VERY expensive.

if you just want to give it a bit more kick, then its the usual intake/exhaust formula. going a bit further, its a matter of how deep your pocket book is.

but, if power is your ultimate goal, than a small turbo would be the most effective method of getting to that power level. then its just a matter of making sure you can supply enough fuel and have a good ECU/StandAlone to make sure that it doesn't grenade the first time you hit redline.
