89 mr2 camshafts?

So i have a stock 89 mr2 and i want to upgrade the exhaust and camshafts. The only camshafts i can find are hks 264 both intake and exhaust. Would i have to change anything else for them to fit? What else can i do to gain power?

is your Mr2 NA or SC?

also, the same question applies to the cams.

if you have an NA setup and run SC cams, in general you'll lose power.

beyond that, if you're running a factory ECU, then you would see some gain, but until the ECU is tuned specifically for those cams (and whatever else you get done), you won't get the full advantage.

if possible, you can open the intake and exhaust. the impact can be felt immediately and all over the entire power band.

i'm in NorCal. so, i do not know if there are local shops that could/would tune a factory engine in your area.

are the HKS cams designed for an NA application? if not, then you would lose power by swapping those in. the funny part is that the simplest and cheapest upgrade for turbo/sc cars, is a set of NA cams - this is due to the fact that NA cams tend to have a higher lift and longer duration. NA cams open the valves longer and allow more air.

and tuning an ECU on a factory engine is not a wise investment in time and money. will you gain a few hp? maybe. but, the return on investment is not very good. the money could be better spent elsewhere.

per an NA setup, the factory ECU is pretty well balanced. if you really want to get everything you can from an NA setup: having the head port polished (and port matched), 1mm oversized valves, upgrade to a lightweight valve train, balance and lighten the bottom end (crank, rods and pistons), lightweight clutch and flywheel. all of that would give you much better engine response and acceleration.

those are your basic options.

inversely, you could get a 4agze setup, or a custom small ball bearing turbo. either setup would (probably) cost less, net you more power, etc, etc.

if you just want to drive faster overall... upgrade your brake pads, rotors, lines and fluid, springs and struts and get the softest and stickiest tires you can.

so, in short, if it were my aw11 and wanted to drop some cash into it... i would do the following (in this order):
tires, brakes, suspension, an aftermarket (even custom) cold air intake and a bit of exhaust work.

i hope this helps.

What is your budget for cams? If you want to try something basically for close to free, you could run a small port exhaust cam to broaden your torque band a bit. Have you looked at Kamakazee Cams? http://tedcomponents.com/4ag.htm How about the good ol' 101 grind webcams? http://www.webcamshafts.com/pages/au...75_000698.html

If you are gonna get a good flowing cam, then you'd want to get an exhaust system that can keep up with it. What header options have you been looking at?

I HIGHLY recommend giving Billzilla's website a good read to learn how to extract power outta the 4A: http://www.billzilla.org/4agmods.htm

Other things that come to mind are...
What flywheel are you running?
You can easily turn stock cam gears into adjustable gears in less than 10 mins with a dremel and adjust your cam timing to maximize power in the particular band you are looking for (lower, mid range, upper).
You can enrich your fuel mixture by playing with the AFM. See my guide here: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index...50504#msg50504
You can disconnect the vacuum source to your EGR valve
If you live in a climate that rarely sees freezing temps, you can install a $5 brass water valve in your throttle body heater circuit to shut the flow down to about 10% or so (or just disconnect the water all together if you don't mind having a cold idle all the time = free).
What sort of air cleaner are you using? If its an open element in your engine compartment, then you could duct some cool air to your air filter for cheap.
You could run some Denso Iridium plugs, also get some Nology Hotcore Wires...

Also, have you considered the inverse of lightening your car? Remember acceleration = force divided by mass, so less mass will result in higher acceleration. If you wanna get serious, you could easily loose 80 lbs of just carpeting, sound deadening, and unneeded plastic panels. Remove your A/C system (if you have one) and both bumper cores for another 100 lbs removed, etcetera... How about light weight wheels?

Again, it's all about how serious you want to get.

I'd wait on cams... so many other mods you should do first!
