dont know what to get....

i just bought a 91 mr2 n/a and i have ideas about what i want to do to it but i dont know what parts to get for it..

Eventually i'll go turbo but not right away.

things i want to do to it

headers, intake and suspension, and cam gears those are the major ones right now

i dont know what kind of headers to buy or where to buy them,

intake is pretty cheap and easy to find i'll either buy a k&n cold air intake system

or aem short ram air intake.

for suspension im looking to spend hopefully no more than 1k. but i know that its not cheap so i'll probably add that one last.

for cam gears i have no idea where to start or what to look for and where to buy..

if u guys have any tips or suggestions for me i'm more than willing to listen..
thanks

Cam gears without upgraded cams won't do anything for you.

save your money for the turbo swap...why spend a few hundred here and there..it adds up quickly..and the performance you will get out of it will only disappoint you....drive the car...build the bank account..then enjoy added power....

honestly the best money you can spend for these cars is suspension. Id look into a decent set of lowering springs (eibach are good) and then some adjustable struts like tokico or koni

along with TheEngineer's statement, i would add upgraded brake pads (Axxis Ultimates comes to mind first), braided steel brake lines and some high quality fluid (ATE SuperBlue if available). if money allows, i would also recommend replacing the rotors with new ones - i strongly recommend NOT getting any with cross drills.

I'm with these guys. If you're going to eventually do a turbo swap, modding the 5s is a complete waste. Suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, etc. will not only help make the car even more fun to drive in n/a form, but they won't be redundant when you do the swap. Pretty much anything you do to the n/a motor either can't be used or wouldn't be any benefit with the 3s-gte in there.

I have to echo the general sentiment expressed by those who responded- without a solid suspension set-up your Mister Two will be a seriously compromised machine. (I speak from experience, tragically ) The MR2 is chiefly a sports car that exudes handling prowess, so before supplementing the powertrain ensure that the foundation (a.k.a the suspension and all its encompassing components) is solid.

As I mentioned earlier, I made the mistake of doing a turbo-swap on my '91 hardtop BEFORE addressing the suspension mods and consequently threw the balance of the car completely off. I would recommend replacing such essential suspension components as the sway bar bushings, ball joints, and steering knuckles if they are worse for the wear (I was able to land a solid deal on a front stabilizer bar mounting bracket for just under $20 at toyotapartszone.com ). Trust me, these may not be as glamorous parts as adding after-market sways but they are integral parts that keep your Mister Two planted and stable during turns and are sadly often times neglected. Only after you ensure that these essential components are in decent kit should you move onto upgrading the tires, sway bars, springs, etc.

Hope that my advice helps!

i wish to add to the above knowledge (and experience) filled post.

upgrade the brakes!

i ask this simple question to a lot of people: if you cannot stop, what is the point in going?

i do understand that my question is grossly overbiased, being that every Mr2 has factory brakes (at least). while they do an OK job of slowing one down from their chosen speed, a small investment into better brake pads, will give you far better deceleration characteristics and make the car safer overall.

i strongly recommend a brake pad like the Axxis Ultimates. www.buybrakes.com has them for sale, and they are NOT expensive. also, if you upgrade the fronts, ABSOLUTELY upgrade the rears to the same OR BETTER pads.
