I am building up my 93 Mr na with a Garrett TB0344 turbo kit from Burien toyota. I have porteted and poloshed the heads and am doing a 3 angle valve cut. Like the rest of the 5sfe owners I havent found a cam yet, but I still have a little time before the se2002 show. the link to Burien is http://poweredbytoyota.com/ . I hope to get close to 200bhp with the garret 6lbs turbo. Might anyone have any other ideas, I am all ears.

Good luck with the build-up, Toolie. Us Camry-folk also have the 5SFE, and we'll be very interested in your progess. So, keep us informed.

Welcome to TN. We're glad to have you!

I don't mean to throw all your ideas out the window with this statement but I was wondering why don't you just get a 3S-GTE motor with the MR2 transmission. Everything should bolt up and you are already looking at around 200 bhp stock. There are people out there though that have built their own 5S-GTE motors with a whole lot of bottom end torque so I say go for it and if all else fails get a 3S-GTE motor.

I put Web Cam's "294" grind cams in my '91 MR2 n/a and can tell you from personal experience it's well worth the $600 cost. I think their webpage is http://www.webcaminc.com -phone is (909) 369 5144. Those cams with Hotshot headers and HKS intake generate 120 hp and 125 ft/lbs at the wheels of my slightly tired (125k miles) MR2 according to my local dyno shop.

I'm looking at the Burien turbo kit, too, but would much prefer a supercharger -I've already got headers and hate the thought of wasting a perfectly good part- but no one makes a kit to my knowledge, although a guy in the MR2 International Owner's Club posted a note to see whether there was enough interest to develop one. Have you heard of anyone doing that mod?

Sure, its fun to throw around the "Why dont you just get a 3sgte??", there seems to be a rash of it going around lately. Heres why i will probably never get a 3sgte: They are damned hard to find, then if you do find one you have to pay alot of money to have it shipped, but before you do that you have to find someone who can acctually do the swap perfectly (unless you can, then youve got it in the bag), and then the engine i find may have high milage or unseen problems (this all goes for the tranny too), not to mention this is already become very expensive (engine, tranny, shipping, LABOR). maybe im just being a curmudgeon, but that turbo kit fot the 5sfe sounds like gods gift to all of us riding a 5sfe, for price and performance.
sorry, about the rant.

Right on Dark. I am totally with you about that one. The 3S-GTE sounds really nice, but unless i find one with 15,000 miles on it laying in my backyard, (with the tranny), its too much work, risk, and money! Im probably gonna go with the turbo kit, still looking around for other options though.

Well there is always a hybrid 5sfe block with a 3sgte head I think that would be a very good combo since they use that in the 700hp 3sgte ..

If I remember right the 5sfe and 3sgte blocks are almost the same so the 3sgte head fits on with some custom fitting.sice the 3sgte is a 2L and the 5sfe is a 2.2L the engine would be like a stroked 3sgte.

3SGTE has other things going for it, oil squirters and better water passages etc.

Toolie...just an FYI. I was an early installer of the Burien turbo kit on my 96 Camry. If you want details of my install, go to my web site and poke around. I also rewrote the installation manual (with a slant toward installing on a Camry).

Ok, I wanted to clear up a couple things. First off, everyone I knwo who has used the burien kit says its garbage, and nearly all of them do the entire job, then end up taking it off. As for everyone who pulls the "just get a 3sgte" card, heres something to chew on, not everyone wants one! For me at least, theres a lot more satisfaction in turboing the 5s. For the 4k it costs for a full jdm rear clip with instalation, i could buy a turbo mr2. Further, as for people bashing the 5s, its a kick ass engine. Its tougher than nails, and in all practical senses, is more powerful than the 3sgte. if you took the turbo off the 3sgte(dont hold me to this, i didnt acctually do the calculation), it would have like 90 horsepower. No, I'm not saying the 3s is a sh*tty engine, its a nice one, its well tuned and can handle quite a bit. But hey, so can the 5. Hope I didnt miss anything

Sorry bro, gotta disagree with the 5S being a good performance motor. The head just flows too poorly to take advantage of boost or any other bolt on mod. A 5S with a 3SGE head on the other hand...
