1989 mr2 cassette player issues??

im having issues with my casette player in my 1989 toyota mr2, the casette wont accept the tape and draw it in to the player, if i push it in it feels like their is something in the back that wont move out of place, and the "tape" button does nothing, but the eject button seems to be working ok.
any ideas on how to fix it?

Hmmmm do you think you have an 8 track cartridge stuck in there causing it to lock up?

Sorry I just couldn't resist I think as with any sort of discontinued technology you're on your own to tear it open to figure out what is the culprit. Have you tried searching http://www.car-part.com to see if you can find a cheap replacement? All you need to do is find one that is mechanically sound, then replace your front face and/or missing/broken buttons as needed with your good parts.

Good luck with it. I remember our old 1987 4Runner had a doublebay radio + cassette player that worked flawlessly till we sold it in 2000. Have you peaked inside it with a flashlight? Perhaps it's something simple and easy to extract/fix with needle nose pliers?

Good luck man!

honestly... pull it out and you'd have to open the shell to see if any spring is missing OR if anything is blocking the cassette from resting fully into place...

beyond that, being that it is nearly impossible to find replacement cassette decks, you might wish to replace it with a standard cd deck.

Nope I haven't done that yet, but thanks for the idea, I'll take a look.

Good luck man!

Why worry about an old cassette deck, just replace it with a new CD HU that can also control an iPod. After all, to the 21st century!
