Question SW20 Gas tank issue

Very new member here but i've been told this is the best place to turn. I'm restoring a 91 JDM SW20 and find myself with a COMPLETELY sludged up gas tank , i've been told it may be pointless to try to clean as once u have a sludge build up it always returns and i'm having REAL trouble in sourcing a SW20 tank. What i need to know is
1. Does an attempt at cleaning make sense?
2. Can an AW11 tank fit the SW20, or be modified to fit?

So nobody has ever had to deal with a bum gas tank on a restoration before?

I would try getting one of those kits for sealing the inside of a gas tank. It is basically epoxy that coats the whole thing. They should have instructions on how to clean the tank before hand. I do not buy that it can't be done.

It is very doubtful a mk1 tank would fit. The mk2 tank gets very narrow in the middle to fit down the tunnel in between the seats.

Alright so i guess a cleaning is what is in order then. I'm trying this tomorrow morning so wish me luck. I'm going with lacquer thinner and some small bolts to slosh around and try to get the majority of the gunk out. Then maybe a acetone based soak for a day and then sun dry for a few days. I wont lie i'm still very worried this wont work though and i'll end up having to wrecker the car out of traffic one morning because the fuel pumps jammed to h&ll.

I just ebayed the fuel tank sealer, how would i coat the interior of the tank with it after its cleaned? cutting the tank isnt really an option locally

They should have instructions but I would imagine you plug all the holes but one, pore the stuff in and then roll the tank around to get it all over inside. Sounds like you have it covered on the cleaning.

Well i attempted a clean and i guess it is somewhat cleaner, i'm seeing metal in some spots so that's a start. I'm wondering if it makes sense to coat the tank if its not perfectly clean, won't the coating just flake off with the hardened gas? If i can't get this right in the course off this week i'm going to put the tank back up, cut a hole in the car floor and cut and hose the fuel lines so i can get at the fuel pump from inside the car (poor design flaw on toyota's part) and buy LOTS of fuel pumps.
