background: 91 mr2 turbo. recently replaced my alternator. electric works when key is turned to acc. when engaging the clutch and trying to crank the engine, everything shuts off.
after having been giving a tip on checking the grounds (dude felt it was high load with a bad ground) before tearing out my dash to check power side of the battery terminal, i believe i checked all the grounds on the car. everything seems to be intact, electric turns on at acc, but it still doesnt crank.
i decided to then see if using my truck as a solid ground would work, so i jumped my mr2 without the positive side connected to the car. no dice. then i connected both negative and positive to both truck and car. it weakly cranked! after the 2nd try however, it failed to crank.
so...whats anyone's suggestion here? is a bad connection of positive (power), is it the starter? am i looking to tear out the dash to find power or continuity to the ignition?
thank you all for your help. im determined to get this car started! its smooth sailing from there on out. haha.
here ya go. the peice that is close in the picture is the waterneck that goes to the coolant filler cap. So follow that down and then look back toward the cockpit and the starter is the black peice with the metal rod on the side of it. The connections to the starter are actually on the firewall side of the starter.
thanks to both of you. thats some real shiny stuff in there. haha.
sidenote: when i started trying to figure this out, i also remember the electricity cutting out when i had the key in the acc position, turning the lights on and off a few times (without having tried to crank the engine).
reason i bring this up is because i didnt even get to the sequence of attempting to crank the engine. this may or may not isolate the starter as a cause (which lead heads to question a power issue from the positive).
how do you all feel about this before i get into tearing out the starter and testing it?
To start, I think you will have to check both battery connections//post terminals /cables at the battery and the starter. Check all fuses.
Electrical issues can be very hard to track down.
okay i will do that. negative cable and posts i can replace. positive side i will have to tear out the dash and check through the firewall? as far as the starter goes, can i just check the connections with a volt meter, or should i expect to take it out? i mean ima have to remove hoses and the airbox to simply check with a volt meter anyway no?
I would physically check the cables themselves for rust/corrosion on top of a multimeter test. And I think I would remove the starter have have it checked for free at O'Reillys, Advance, Pepboys, etc.
i removed the air box and tested power going into the starter, which i have. so if the harness going into the starter is good, it indicates that the starter might be bad or the solenoid isn't activating? if so, is this the harness that piggy backs to the solenoid? i tested that and the built in ground on the right side of the starter (towards the back), showing no power. if that's the case, is the starter bad, or do i need to take the starter out to have it tested?
2nd: any idea what these random harnesses and wires are for or are they just miscellaneous auxiliaries? they're coming off the firewall. thanks guys.
