I was a bit curious about the insurance on the 1st gen MR2's....
how would it compare to a 4runner?? (someone i know said it's really high, but i want more opinions...)
I've heard it slides REALLY easy in the wet...
is that true?? I could have bought an 85 for 2500 and it only had about 90k miles on it....really nice one, but dad read reviews about it being really easy to loose control of and you need to be very careful in the wet. Not that you wouldn't be in every car, but judjing by the words of others online he thinks it's too dangerous for me... (first car...)
i have a second gen and you basically have to try to slide it in the rain just as if it wasnt raining. but when its wet and you start to slide.... you can slide for a while so be careful
im more interested in the 1st gen...i haven't seen any 2nd ones around here...and even if i did i bet ya i couldn't afford it....
but thanx, that helps as i'm going to keep my eye out for one...never know!
but anyway...anyone know the characteristics of the 1st gen and it';s safety ratings? i've had no luck at all with the safety records/beliefs....
i have read that a guy walked away from a bad roll...and other people with other wrecks...but not really collisions.. and nothing i've read really gave the MR2 good comments in terms of wet weather driving
Well nearly all rear wheel drive cars are a bit tricky to control in bad weather conditions but I'm sure MRs are even harder to control. Also, considering this will be your first car I'm guessing that you're 18ish so insurance would be pretty high because, 1. you don't have much driving experience and 2. it's an mr2...
I am 17 an let me tell ya...insurance SUCKS....it is extremely expensive.....but is worth every penny spent! The MR2 is an amazing car....!

woah! no way...really?? howcome? i'd think they would be better for insurance because they are slower, probably more stable in the rain, eaiser to see, and maybe even safer than the small quick mr2.... i don't see the logic in that...are they stolen frequently??
most of the cars which haf accidents in canada in snowy winters are SUVs...why doesn't the 4WD help u may ask...
the reality is that drivers think they are invincible in SUVs..and so they dart back and forth on the road...so thts why u see SUVs ending up in ditches :P
yeah I know that you can go fast in one...but i didn't think someone would speed around crazy like one would in an MR2... but i guess there are some arrogant people that do think they are invincible....
in my driver's ed class the teacher showed us a movie, and in one scenerio, a man in a big truck about f-250 size thought his truck was big enough to ford this rushing flow of floodwater that was moving across the road... bad idea.
the bad part was that he had his little 5 year old son with him and they both got washed over the bank, luckily they were both saved.... it showed clips of him handing his son out to someone.
yo are you guys in the UK? what insurers are insuring you? im planning to do the same as you are, im 18 though still a new driver (u may have seen my other post) good to see you can actually be accepted for insurance! you have gotten further than me :P
well no, us, and i'm covered for another year under my parent's insurance.... then i'm on my own and have to pay for it
oh and i thought i'd mention this... i just passed my permit test and i will probably start driving on friday most likely (if the date in my head is right)
I wouldn't say the MR2's are difficult to drive if you learn how to drive them, unlike most other cars, throttle and steering input is crucial, especially when you're going fast, and especially when it rains... they call it snap oversteer, you go into a turn a little hot, back off the throttle or brake midturn, the weight shifts to the front of the car, the rear end loses traction and you find yourself spinning, most of the times just a 180, sometimes for much longer than that. I've been lucky cause I've been able to avoid any collisions. The trick with the MR2 is to brake before or early in the turn (with minimal steering input) and then accelerate through the turn. If you learn this, you'll dust most other cars around turns. You should get the MR2, no other car I've driven gives that same feeling
