Lightened pistons for mah camry

There was some more machining done all around... they sit at 369.1 grams right now... a far cry from the stock 400-410g. Only time will tell if they blow LOL.

well first ill ask.....why? and second i hope you didnt ruin the structural integrity of the pistons because the ammount of pressure and heat then undergo may very well ruin the engine if they fail

I would never remove material from the combustion surface structure... What can possibly hope to be gained here with "somewhat lighter" pistons? Is this a boost motor or some kind of stroke build?

Boosted motor.

Less rotating mass. Means I can significantly cut down on the amount of counterweights I need on the crank. With an inline 4, primary imbalance isn't an issue but secondary is. Relieve my issues with chucking the crank in a lathe and knifedging it by lessening the rotating mass, the reason for the counterweights in the first place.

Don't worry, I didn't just chuck the pistons in a mill and hope for the best. I measured out the valve reliefs and left enough aluminum in the crown to take the brunt of everything.

These pistons are overbuilt anyways. They're nearly .4" crown thickness to begin with... unnecessary and overbuilt, but in a good way. It'll be getting oil cooling and ceramic coatings to help it cope.

Sounds like a plan!

I was hoping this was not some random "I think I'll lighten my pistons" episode.

rev it up

nice! oscaryu1 less weight on that rotating assy means it can rotate
faster...more quickly..
do you plan on lightening the crank counter wieghts or will that be done in the knifedging process? I need to do more studying on the bottom end balance thing ....but I'm in the middle of a build now. I'd be scared to grind on these new forged pistons and rods, that I payed and arm and a leg for! However , I am looking for an economic solution for the lightened flywheel.
Looking at cheaper chrome molly flywheels now.
