Ok guys. I replaced my valve cover gasket on my 91 turbo today. Boy that was a good time, especially for someone who doesn't work on cars all that often. Anyhow, I Couldnt get it to run very long afterwards because I forgot to reattach a vacuum hose of some kind going from the throttle body to the intake. Got that fixed, started fine.
Then I degreased my engine. It started up just fine afterwards, but then when I drove it around it would bog down until about 4500-5000 then it would pick up. I figured I got the distributor wet but I also knew it could be something from the valve cover gasket change that I forgot to hook up. I double checked my connections and everything seems tight.
I then took it for another spin and it ran much better the second go around. But, for some reason, it just seems like it still isn't punching like it usually does. I got on the highway and pressed into the accelerator to change lanes and that typical little extra push from the turbo just didnt seem to be there. It accelerated and all, just not like it usually does.
You all will prolly want to choke me but I haven't cracked open the distributor yet to see if it's wet. Do you think that's what's causing my issue? I always figured if that was the case it wouldn't have even started. Will letting it sit overnight do the job, or do I need to open up the distributor? Or could it be that I still haven't found yet another vacuum leak from a hose?
Yeah, I was thinking it was the ignition stuff. I bet the spark plugs could stand to be replaced as well anyways, since the owner before me didn't seem like he was gonna rush out and do it.
I will take the baby for a spin today and see how she's acting. If she's still a bit upset I'll take the distributor cap off and inspect for moisture and such. I'll take pics if necessary...
how did u degrease the engine??....sprayed on the gunk remover and just power spray the engine??...did u cover the dizzy/cap and rotor and not spray directly on the wires??.....
You're gonna scream, but I went and bought a can of that petroleum style degreaser (the guy who owned this car before me didn't keep the engine bay clean) and sprayed it down, then used a hose to rinse it. NOW, in my defense I didn't use pressure, but NO I didn't cover the dizzy. I tried to, but a good portion of it's base was pretty dirty. I figured I could soak it and then let it dry out and that would be sufficient. I guess i always had an on/off attitude towards dizzys. I figured you either got it wet so it wont start or it's fine and runs great. I am now realizing there may be a middle ground, lol....
If I need a new cap, rotor, wires and plugs where would you all recommend I go? Is it cheaper to get it all from one of the mr2 stores online like partznet, should I go to toyota, or is this one of those replacements that wouldn't be bad if I went to like an autozone?
oem replacement iginiton parts are best IMO......pull off ur cap...let things dry off completly and try to see if problem still persists..if not..then u may have to get new parts...the engine can take a little water...but not a prolonged soaking....do u still have the plastic cover under the engine vent that directs water away from vital components????...that helps during rain and car washes......
Is it true that I don't gap the spark plugs? I saw that under the hood, just want to make sure it's correct. Should I put something on the thread of the plugs to keep them from getting seized? I did that with my crx but making sure it's kosher on the mr2...
most mr2s use platnum tipped plugs, dont use a gapper that type of plug cuz that will actually take around 50% of the life of it away, they are all pregapped
