Head Gasket Replacement Costs?

Thanks for the advice on the tranny question that I had. It turns out that the shift cable was missing a linkeage to the shifter arm and was popping out and not allowing the car to roll through all the gears. I need to have the piston rings and a valve on the number 1 cyclinder replaced. A local mechanic said that it would be 22 hours of labor to replace the rings and a valve along with a new head gasket on my 91 Turbo. Dos that sound right, 22 hours?

Thanks

Well if you look at the repair manual, it may say that. However, that is an estimate. It actually would not take a mechanic that long unless he is clueless, and in that case say a few prayers. But anyways, mechanics always charge you what the repair manual says, not for how long the repair actually takes. Now if you know the mechanic personally, that's a different story

i agree with the above comments i took my st-185 (same block) to toyota for teh waterpipe behind the turbo to be replaced ... £361

after that my local garage that i had always used i popped it their if i could not do the work

clutch £280...... a good deal as its book was 10 hours ...

apart from the cam belt its a relatively easy job, time consuming, but easy...

but i HATE cam belts anyway !!

doesn't help its a tight on on MR2 / All Trac..

is there no-one in the group local to you or is there a good mate in a garage where you can say "i'll pick it up in a weeks time, take your time and keep it cheep" ? thats what i did with the clutch

that and a bottle of scotch to the mechanic afterwards !!
