i'm extremely new to toyotas so cut me break a here. i was just wondering what swaps you can do into an n/a 86 mr2. i've seen on many boards the 3sgte swap but never into a first gen like this any help on information into an engine to swap and the difficulty of the swap would be appreciated.
Im a little biased here....but I'd definently go with the 4A-GZE. The 4A-GE in both low compression and high compression both have strong blocks, but not as strong as the "Z" motor.
The 4A-GZE is different in that it has oil jets to cool the engine, has a thicker block, and of course, a supercharger. I believe but am not sure that the 20V has similar enhancements, but it is also much more expensive, and hard to find, not only hard to find the engine itself, but parts to modify it with.

it to how it should be.
would i have to build the mounts myself or is there a company that makes custom pipes and mounts for the 3sgte? also i've noticed 3 or 4 different versions of this engine what are the differences?
I think you have to make the mounts yourself. I dont think there is anyone out there that acutally produces them... but i could be wrong. There are 3 versions of the 3sgte... 1st gen, 200hp... 2nd gen, 225hp... 3rd gen, 245hp.
Hey, before you do anything as serious as an engine swap, ask yourself what you want out of this car. If you want a track/fun car for the turns with decent power, then IMO you certainly do-notdo not want to put in a MKII motor, as that it will ofset the balance of the car.
The problem of course with turboing a 4A-GE or one of its variants (or even the MKII turbo motors) is of course the dreaded phenomena of "turbo lag", that is, the delay between you hitting the gas, and the turbos spooling up.
I don't mean to offend any of the MKIIers around her, but look how ferrari, lamborghini, the top of the line porsche (Carrera GT), McLaren F1, etc, all do their motors. Not a single of of them is a turbo (or any sort of forced induction for that matter)
If i wanted straightline speed, id do a engine swap, but in a big turbo, a huge wing, really big tires in the back, and small ones in the front, but thats not what i'm looking for, and IMO, thats not what the MR2 was designed to do.
I like the 4A-GZE, because there is absolutely zero lag, at least none that I can detect. It has a clutched supercharger too, which means it only engages when you want it to.
Many people/compaines lessen the lag using a twin turbo system, or even four turbochargers.... but I do not believe that you can fit two in the engine bay, and even if you did, i don't think that the engine can push out enough air to spool them efficiently.
So...in conclusion, I personally wouldnt turbo your motor, or put one in thats not meant for an AW11, but if you really want to go fast in a straight line, then put in the MKII motor.
Oh, and finally, the turbo motor will make the car faster, but a properly modified 4A-GZE will be pretty close behind...and if you ask me, will be laps ahead of the other guy at the track.

between 500-1500, depending on the age and condition of the engine.
Installation shouldnt be too expensive, it is literally a "drop in" motor, installing exactly the same as the engine you have right now.
If you can, make sure to test the block for any micro fractures, and that you are getting full compression on all four cylinders. Failing these tests will make serious turning of the engine impossible.
Regarding JDM engines, yes, they will give you more horsepower, and yes, they will pass tail-pipe emission tests, but they do not have an EGR, which means that any observant smog checker will not clear your vehicle.
So, you can roll the dice, and see if you get by, but to me its not worth it.
I ended up using a US-spec engine, but using a JDM supercharger out of a crashed MR2 which happened to end up at the local pick and pull. $50..... (thank god these guys at the junkyards dont know jack about japanese motors....or it would have cost me much, much more)

Cadillac V8s have been known to be dropped in to the MK1s

I kindly disagree.
I had the opportunity to have track time in a MKI with a 3SGTE in it and it was easily one of the best handling MR2s I have been in.
Swapping engines is not a gaurantee of messing up weight balance in a negative way.
