hey,
well through my amazing junkyard karma i
was able to get another 00 vvt-i v6 for
1000 shipped w/ low miles, ecu and all
acc..i will not need ps pump though..2-3
hp right there by not using ps pump..

i also went to another yard and got a 99 v6
tranny which is identical to mr2 except it
has fwd linkage.. for 200 and w/ 26,000 miles after powerwashed it looked brand new..
the 99+ manual tranny is a redesigned
93 tranny w/ even better synchro's and
gear design for better shifting .. also
the gears are same a mr2 gearing .. this
has already been verified by aother v6 swapper..(joe vick) .. i talked to him
at se2002.. oh case is excactly same too..

this swap in not a weekend project by any
means but i think it can be done for less
cost than a turbo swap but it requires some
custom parts .. getting in car is easy and
will take 1 -2 days to install then the
wiring fun begins..

the cool part is once you getting running
and want more power order a s/c slap
it on add a 6lb pulley and fuel computer
and you have almost 275hp to the wheels and
lots of yummy torque..

i am not saying v6 is a better swap in any way just a alternative to 4cyl.. the v6 is
reccommended for guys who like to tinker
and don't mind custom work.. the turbo
motor is still king and is very proven .
plus there is a 98% more parts for it than
v6..

derek

Do you know which V6 motors used the 5sfe transmission? What years were those motors made (so I know what to look for in a junkyard)? I know there were two types made for the Camry -one for the early to mid-90's and a later one. Do they take the same bell housing (or is it cast into the transmission casing)? Same pilot bearing (the one the input shaft fits into the flywheel)? This is good news to me, as I was anticipating all sorts of problems with the cost of a transmission as well as shift linkages, making half shafts fit, etc.

It seems that there is enough room to run the rear exhaust on either side of the rear motor mount; the front should be no problem. I HOPE the motor mounts will match up and the rear bulkhead doesn't have to be chopped into. I assume a remote oil filter will eliminate any problem with clearances for that routine maintenance item, but I don't know about spark plug clearances. I agree the wiring sounds like a real headache, but ripping out the 5sfe wiring harness and putting in the V6 harness should be somewhat straightforward.

Which raises a minor issue: does someone make a converter for the tach, or will I have to rip into the dashboard and make a new tach from a V6 fit?

Keep us posted on your progress, as I'm coming up to the point I have to decide between (a) putting a turbo on my 5sfe (which may ultimately lead to an engine rebuild) or (b) going with a supercharger (same problem) or (c) putting in a V6 which has development problems, but sounds like it will be a more dependable option as time goes on, especially since the torque of a V6 is more important to me than ultimate horsepower in the high-end, at least in a car I'm using on the street as opposed to a track.

hey,
like i said turbo tranny will bolt right on..
Joe Vick at atlantamr2s.com told me
his 91t tranny felt funny with v6 so he
went out and bought a 99 v6 tranny and now it runs great...
i would not waste your time w/ 5s tranny on v6.. but it is your choice..

this motor will mount right in w/o any cutting at all of any mr2 body part .

there is actually more room in engine
bay w/ v6 .. i know it sounds weird but it is true.

a NA tach is perfect for v6 as redline is
excactly same as V6.. only issue for me
is to convert 93 speedo sensor on tranny to
use cable ..real easy..

you have to use v6 harness ..no other way
except for EMS.. v6 is direct ignition and
a lot more sensors than 5sfe..

like i said a lot more involed and a lot more money to do it right and make it reliable..

to see more info go to http://www.mr2faq.com and
look under mk2 forum /sub forum hybrid mk2s.i have a post there w/ pix.
