I am just now becoming aware that the 5SFE motor in my '91 MR2 n/a was also put in later Camrys. Later Camrys came with V-6 motors as an option. Therefore, what fits in a Camry engine bay (a V-6)ought to fit in a MR2, no? Has anyone heard of doing this? Did the V-6 come with a 5-speed manual transmission, or only an auto?
I'm not really looking for something different, just dependable. My thinking was that, if the initial hp was about the same, a V6 wouldn't have the turbo lag and wouldn't be as stressed as a turbo on the 5sfe, and depending on where I got it, the cost would be the same ($2500 buys a lot of used parts). I guess the answer is, if I'm gonna do an engine swap, might as well go for the 4 cylinder turbo motor that fits instead of shoehorning a v6 into that small space, especially since it's been done a lot (swapping a turbo for a n/a, that is) and v6 swaps apparently are unknown territory ("Here be Dragons".
If that's the case, anyone know the current price range for turbo motors with transmission, ecu, etc? Slapping a turbo on the 5sfe may still be cheaper.
hey,
TORQUE!! this why i am doing 2 v6 swaps.
i am installing motor as soon as flywheel
is made.. i am using 2001 avalon motor
w/ 7k miles.. and it has vvt-i not that
matters..
i am also doing a v6 twin turbo set up w/
custom internals including crank after i
finish NA .. first swap is to get any bugs out and then start on twin turbo stuffed
into my 91 hardtop coverted to all 94 spec
w/ a $ 200 94 parts car i had .. even has
94 dash and custom ordered 94 hardtop sun visors to make it look complete 94..
i talked to head of TRD product development at mr2 meet in B-ham and he said a stock v6 crank will hold 375hp no sweat .. he runs a 10 psi pulley on his
own s/c ..
at meet there were at least 5-10 guys i talked to who were interested in swap and
doing one sometime..
v6 mr2 beat ever guy he raced off line and could hang w/ turbo's .. That car was
thrown together and the one i am doing will
have a lot more custom work so hp will
be up .. plus i am using a lsd tranny which will help..
Guy in reno i am working with also is doing 2 swaps and one is a fully built
v6 w/ s/c , je pistons, arp head bolts,
10 psi pulley and a host of other mods..
this car will be nice and have at least
300hp to wheels.. and way more torque
than 3sgte..
i could car less if my engine will not
make 700HP . how many guys w/ streetable
2's need a 700hp 2.. great for draging
and that's about it ..
Well I guess it is one of the bigest bang for the buck buy's.Good luck with your project sounds very interesting since many of us Camry owners have that engine.
