water in my turbo intake pipe = BOOM

6.5 hours into a 7 hour road trip, my two died... when I was taking the engine out for the rebuild, I noticed water in the intake pipe. It had been driven in rain but that's about it; I didn't try to cross any rivers if that's what you're thinking. Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening again and blowin up my rebuilt motor? I noticed I don't have some of the splash guards that go under the motor, will that solve the problem, or do I need to enclose the filter and extend a pipe down to the side scoop. Thanx

Thats odd. How much water? Unless it was a lot, it shouldn't harm the motor at all. If it was in fact bad then why would we buy water injection kits?

Water in the intake pipe does not equal blown up engine.
What kind of MR2 do you have?
Usually Turbo MR2s blow up from detonation.

quite a good amount, it was a stock 5sfe with the Burien Toyota turbo kit. the official cause of the blown motor was spinning a bearing. There were plenty of other things wrong with it too. I just figured a pipe full of water was bad news.

The 5SFE is a weak engine and 99% of the owners I have seen that have tried to turbo it (which is a lot) have blown it up.
It's not the greatest engine to base a forced inducted car on.

How much water was in there? ... that is the question.
Regardless, if water wasthe problem then your engine would have been hydro-locked ... not a spun bearing.
I am guessing the engine was either: overrevved, too little oil or just was too weak to handle the power the turbo added.
