Question MR2 Transmission Question

Greetings,

I have a 91 MR2 NA (5SFE) that I have converted to a Turbo (3SGTE).
I ran it for three years with the 5SFE tranny - with no trouble.

I am now rebuilding the 3SGTE, with hopes of 400 HP.
I am positive I will need to upgrade the transmission to the E153, which comes with the 3SGTE.

Here is my question...

What cars come with the tranny that I need?
The Camry V6? What years? Will I have to do any modifications?

Thanks for your time,

If you get one from a camry... yes. Get one from an MR2 turbo... along with the axles; inner splines are different if I remember correctly...

MR2 Transmission Question

I appreciate the information, but I am aware of that much.

I am actually looking for specific information, such as what year model Camry. Also, does anyone know if the LSD came standard on any Camry trim level.

Thanks,

no LSD came in the camry e153s.
92-2001 camry v6 are e153. solara 98-02 v6 are e153. also, the sienna minivan which had the 1mz-fe came with the e153 tranny, and the rav4 and 4runner that came with the 1mz used the e153 tranny.
you will have to modify the shift linkage on the camry bellhousing to fit your mr2. just get a used one from an mr2 dude... it'd be so much easier and maybe you can find an LSD model.

93 w/ LSD would be nice. Or even better go with an aftermarket LSD.

So would it not be best to get a newer tranny from, lets say a 2001 Camry, and put an aftermarket LS Diff?

Thanks,

for your project, absolutly not... you dont want to go through the hassle of converting the linkage... just put in an mr2 tranny that already fits right in. an aftermarket LSD will be easy to come by if you want it for that tranny.

Ok great...
With mine being a 91 with a cable speedometer, can I get a newer 93-95 LSD or non LSD to work?

I understand they are the same other than the 93-95 has an electronic sending unit. I assume I can swap it with one off a 91-92.

I am having a hard time finding one with a LSD, but many without. I want to get the newest one available.
