a few performance upgrade questions from a newbie

HEY BOYS N GIRLS!!!!(cant leave out the ladies ya know!)

anyhoo.... i got my mr2 gt t bar turbo 1991 totally standard with full toyota history - every damn bill from new!!! i nearly passed out!

i am used to performance upgrades as i had a 13 sec s12 silvia/200sx turbo on stock engine so i know a few things.

PLEASE NOTE ...... I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS CAR

apart from the obvious things.

the things i have planned are as follows - please correct me if a am wrong - which i may be.

1 - apexi avcr
2 - remap of standard ecu - not chip but full eprom remap - if poss or straight up EMS swap - haltech e6k
3 - 2.5mm exhaust system twin exit custom stainless
4 - supra tt fuel pump ( will it fit? )
5 - supra tt 550 cc injectors ( again will they fit?)

if i change to haltech i will go for map senor though

what kind of turbo do you reccomend for this ( in the uk "s trim/ q trim" etc mean nothing to our tuners so if you could give me EXACT details for the turbo or a specific turbo.

i am looking to go low 12's so would really value your help.

MR HYDE YOU SEEM TO BE THE MAN ON THIS FORUM - so any help would be smashing.

thanks guys

dngrs

Please read. Click "Primer", then "3S-GTE Power Primer".

Good luck.

The link BDSL is a gold mine.

As for your plans:
1. I prefer the Blitz DSBC over other BCs ... although I have never played with the AVCR.

2. I would not mess with the OEM ECU. I would either go full EMS or worse case scenario black boxes (SAFC/VCP). However, you need none of that to get an MR2s into the 12s.

3. 2.5 mm exhaust? ... if my math is correct, that is tiny than a pencil, I do not recommend that

4. & 5. I would not worry about injectors and fuel pump, they will cause you more hamr than good unless you are going for over 300rwp and deep 12s. To get into the 12s you only need 245 rwhp or so ... and the OEM fuel system is good for 275 rwhp which is mid-12s.

I would highly recommend doing things in order:
1. Intake & exhuast
2. Boost controller
3. Intercooler (I would also recommend water injection).
4. Bigger turbo (T3/T4 or a GReddy TD06)

That should be plenty for consistent 12s @ 15~ 16 psi of boost and proper driving.

out of interest -with good driving - what do you rekon my list would be good for?

and will the supra tt injectors be a direct fit?

might as well go the whole hog - sort of

I took time to write my comments, did you take time to read them?

The mods you suggest would decrease performance as I have indicated.

ur first mod......would be to get a tuneup.....change plugs/cap/rotor/wires.....get the car running properly before u start to think about modding......

like mentioned above....u do not need any fuel upgrades if u still on the stock turbo....

u should go here and do some reading.... www.mr2.com

cheers guys -

i did read the posts and fully understood them.
my second post was merely curiosity as i have those parts available for cheap prices and valued some input.
i would obviously do the order you said hyde but in order to go further i wanted to get an idea of the possible 1/4 times if i did fit the parts and got it all mapped up.

these cars are like go karts - love em.

thanks for your help so far guys

Well if a stock MR2 does the 1/4 miel in 14.8 and you are installing parts that will ruin your perfromance ... I am sure you could hit a 16 ... maybe 15 second pass.

The question is, why would you install parts that will hurt performance?

sorry hyde but i dont understand - maybe you got me wrong.

how can increasing the boost coupled with increased fuelling and proper engine mapping possibly slow down the car.

if the parts i listed are the wrong ones then fair enough. but if i perform the mods you suggest and then wanted to further increase performance what would be the best route/parts.

thats what i meant - maybe i wrote it in uk gibberish. lol

As I stated above "I would not worry about injectors and fuel pump, they will cause you more hamr than good."

Running too much fuel HURTS performance.
With the OEM turbo (CT26) you will NEVER run out of fuel.

Also, 2.5 mm for an exhaust is not possible.

If you want mid to high 12s, the answer is relatively easy:
Intake, Exhaust (3"), Boost controller, GReddy Intercooler and a bigger turbo (T3T4 or TD06) ... you may want to add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to increasee your fuel; pressure a bit for added safety.

Talking

thanks hyde

i misunderstood you.

i know that too running rich is bad, due to bore wash plug fouling etc .....

the greddy ic is huge expensive though! will water injection be a suitable substitute?

oh i am also using nitrous - something i have used for many many years. how do these respond to the ol gas.

is the spal twin fan kit a worthwile investment?
also what is the widest tyre i can fit to the rear standard rims - 1991 turbo 14inch - standard ones were 205's i think i read that the wheels are the same width throuout the revisions yet the later ones used 225's( is this right )

ONCE AGAIN I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP I HAVE GOT HERE - ITS A VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFULL FORUM

MUCH BETTER THAN THE NISSAN ONES I HAVE BELONGED TO IN THE PAST.

CHEERS GUYS

HYDE - be gentle on the old newbies not all of them fully understand things - i have more an idea than most newbs but know little about this particular engine. i think you could scare a few of em. i know from the nissan forums how arsey some exp members can be (I DONT MEAN YOU HYDE). i think we got each other wrong from the start. hope i can be of help in the future and will watch and contribute what i can to this forum.

cheers

Most aftermarket intercooler kits come with piping as well.

BTW: There is no exhaust to intercooler pipe

lol ya.... "exhaust to IC piping" ..by that i meant ALL pipings not a single pipe...

but i was thinkin about geting just a front mount intercooler itself, then have the pipings done. well, what do you think from that?

also i want one of those carbon fiber exhaust and do a 3" piping to it.

thats what i was saying ,also down-pipe,up-pipe...and anything i can weld..
