Well you can look at the diagnostic ticket and look for yourself....it shoudl say fail. atleast that's the case with my inspections.

Yeah he could be messin with you, it wouldn't be the first time a mechanic does that.

smog pass

toyotas seem to run close to the edge during smog checks.my sugg. first. make sure the egr is functional. easy to check. with engine idleing in neutral. second. chage the oil (yep) lots of contaminants in there. third. run a full can of BG Brand fuel system cleaner through the tank. fourth. take it for the smog check and pay them to do a pre-test. (dont let them hook you up to the computer as yet..if you get tagged as a gross polluter you will get stuck going to a test only station for the rest of the cars life. also, take out the O2 sensor, examine it, is it carboned up? replace it. if its serviceable, the BG cleaner will really clean it up. Make damn sure you get the car nice and hot before you go for the testing. also, clean out the throttle body with some crc brand or similar throttle body cleaner.........

smog pass

all states will eventually follow calif. rules/laws. its inevitable. anything that is not CARB certified will fail......depending on the technician. CARB means california air resources board. your probably ok for now. but get ready. headers in this state will be an automatic fail. they wont even proceed with the testing. visual inspection is always done prior to the actual hook up. the fines for the techs who pass these cars are heafty, they will loose their license, pay a steep fine etc. they actually send out decoys to various places looking for techs who will look the other way. aftermarket mufflers are probably ok..but not all of them. look for the CARB certified stickers before purchase. intake systems are also problems. I have a K&N system on my 91 tt z. the tech didnt want to go through the trouble of removing the center panel to check so he assumed it was the stock airbox. I may not be so lucky next time.......
