1st thing is to make sure everything is hunky dory ...such as cooling system, oiling system, ignition system, electrical systems. when you start modifying and putting stresses on your car, you want to make sure those components are functioning properly. then- intake(let your engine breathe more), intercooler, boost controller(u will need FCD) and exhaust system. you'll free up the hp/trq already there. I have a '91 also. I saw a significant increase in power just with the Electronic boost controller. just depends on how far you want to take it, how much time and money you're willing to spend and what your HP goals are. this forum is a gold mine of info. Dr. jeckyl/Hyde, MRQTurbo, Ishcoleobo have helped a bunch and are very knowledgeable on the MR2.
As MR2BAd suggested, I would first do a healthy tune up.
Get yourself new TOYOTA cap, rotor wires and plugs.
Do an oil change and get some Castrol Syntec 10/30 in there.
Check out the coolant system.
I would do a fuel filter as well ... and an air filter, unless you are going to get a performamnce intake.
i'll second the recommendation to first to a basic tuneup.....change ignition components.....then get an FCD....a boost controller.....and a decent boost guage....exhaust/downpipe and an upgraded IC should be next.....
yah its getting a tune-up right now. what is a FCD? what about suspension, clutch, short shifter ect.... i thought those would be one of the first things?
FCD = Fuel Cut Defencer.
The computer limits your boost to 12 psi (by cutting fuel).
The FCD raises the FC point to 17 psi.
You can eliminate fuel cut completey for free though.
Clutch - No reason to buy one, unless yours is broke.
Short Shift - they are nice, but do not offer any huge advantage
Suspension - that is up to you. Upgrading the suspension can make the car handle significantly better.
You can buy an upgraded intercooler kit (like the GReddy or Spearco) or you can get a better core and make your own kit (lots more work, but more afforadable ~ possibly).
Some people even do custom trunk-mount intercoolers or water-to-air intercoolers.
where do the IC usually mount at? i was a honda guy soo all this is kinda "reverse?" to me... i was thinkin about getting a good set of suspension first, does anyone know if custom exhaust piping/down pipe is any good or OKAY to have ?
and what websites have good aftermarket parts for mr2?(parts like the ones mention above)
gotriceboy05, most of the more common IC upgrades mount in the same location as factory. As I mentioned above, some custom set ups are mounted in the trunk ... some air-to-water setups are mounted above the engine.
As for getting parts, I would suggest clicking the image in my signature ... it will take you to ATS Racing. Talk to Aaron there, tell him I sent you You can help you with any of your build up needs.
