header heat shield

How necessary is the heat shield on the header on the 5s-fe? Mine is rusted around the bottom bolt and it rattles pretty good. I took it off b/c I won't be driving anywhere far for a while, so it won't get that hot, but it does smell hot and the engine lid gets pretty warm after about 10-15 minutes. Should I put it back on, or is it not all that necessary? If I have to, I'll put it back on, but that rattle sucks.

That heat shield is mostly to prevent that heat from getting to your paint. Its usually not a problem until you wash your car after a LONG drive, and you happen to wipe off some paint w/ that sponge

Some Integra owners have had that problem w/ their hoods after taking off their header heat shield, but we have vented engine bay's, so I dont think you'll have a problem
