odometer/intake problems

I've had the car for 2 weeks now, and just noticed that my odometer reads 1 mile for ever 2 miles traveled. It isn't only the main odometer, but the travel odometer as well. In case it is related, the speedometer doesn't work either. (The cable rusted through the gear attached to the at the tranny) I can't figure out why it is off, but it consistantly reads 1/2 the mileage travelled. The wheels on the car are 17's, with 215/40s in front and 235/45s in rear. Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks you for any help.
By the way, installed an Apex-i power intake, on this boards advice, and I love it. But it makes a weird thrumming noise for about a second every time I start boosting. It doesn't it about half the time...normal? Thanks again.

i just stopped by Toyota and found out that because the speedometer only reads about half my mile per hour, the odometer only reads half the miles travelled. So that problem is fixed. However the intake sound is still present. Any ideas?

It sounds as if there is something obstructing the path of flow, but the only thing around the filter is the shield. Should the shield be left on the intake, or can I just take it off?

Yeah, apparently MR2's are prone to have speedo cable problems...but then again, read on:
I own my 6th MR2 right now, and so far 3 of them had a broken cable, all broken right above the gear. However, the "funny" thing about this is that the 3 with broken cables were bought from car dealers and the other 3 were not...and they never needed one.
It doesn't take a genious to figure that one out.
BTW, luckily the MR2 has a multi piece cable, so replacement is a snap, assuming you haven't fixed yours already. It took me about 15 minutes to fix my last one, the first time it took about an hour because I spent a while studying everything.
I just thought I would mention that it is an easy job, so you don't waste any money paying someone to do it...heck you don't even need any tools, the ends come off by hand (assuming the car dealers didn't overtighted them when the were, well, you know).
By the way, have you actually seen this rust? I cannot imagine it rusting, it is well sealed and I have never seen such a thing on a speedo cable!

Sure:
Get under the rear of the car, preferrably with ramps under the rear tires. Simply unscrew the cable connection by hand at the transmission. If it is too tight, use a wrench, but if one is used, you only need to get it started, then it comes off very easily. Remove the air filter assembly...this is an excuse to completely remove it and clean everything, and get out all of the leaves that manage to get under it. Then there are two or three "holders" that the cable passes through in the engine bay as the cable bends through it - simply unsnap the cable from them. Then remove the cable from the engine compartment until it hangs below the car. Next remove a couple of the 10mm bolts on the plastic pan near the cable where it goes to the middle of the car. There is no need to pull the whole pan off unless you want to. There will be another separation point about a foot forward of the rear tires where you can unscrew the cable by hand. That is it...it will come right out. The only note is to make sure the cable goes in keyed in the same direction as the gear in the transmission. This is relatively simple however because it has two possible slot directions - you can feel with your finger (or use a mirror). At the middle conection, it will pretty much go in any way you stick it in (square end connection).
All of this may make more sense once you are looking at it, but it is really simple once you do. Even the first time I fixed one, the actual "working time" was about 20-30 minutes
Simply buy only the rear section (if that is the broken part) and reinstall it in reverse of this. I probably paid too much, but for convenience sake I bought the rear section at my nearest dealership...$54 if I remember correctly. If it is broke somewhere in the front section, then it would be a more time consuming job, but still nothing major.
