Hi, This is my first post and was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction in looking for a mr2.
I have found a really good deal on a 91 NA Auto mr2 for really cheap, but the concern of mine was how hard is it to do auto/man swaps on the mr2? Is it even worth it or should i pay the extra $ for a mr2 that is already 5spd? I would also be doing the 3S-GTE swap at the time of doing the conversion.
You are better off just buying a Turbo model to begin with.... it will be cheaper once you get everything together... I have first hand experience with that. Also... generally a 5spd MR2 will be cheaper than an Auto MR2... the automatic is much more rare than the 5spd is. At the very least start with a 5spd NA... but I would recommend just buying a turbo to begin with.

The thing is its a really good deal, Its a friends mom who has the MR2, She said that for me she is willing to sell it for $4000 and it only has 70,000miles. Where as the cheapest 5spd MR2 around here is asking 7k and turbo goes for around 10k+ thats why im asking, with that $6000 difference is it worth it? with the extra money I would put it towards building it for higher psi
Buy the car for $4k and sell it for more then buy a turbo
No swap will go 100% smooth. You'll run into problem, mistake etc.
If you can buy it, why swap it?
BTW I don't know if the turbo come with bigger brake or better suspension.
What is required to do the manual conversion? If no welding is required im sure I could do the swap myself, im geussing the basics, pedal assembly, ecu, engine/tranny, resivioir. Are there any write ups i can read?
i have a 5 speed na right now, im lookin at 2500 for the clip needed for the job, about 1500 for the swap, plus any problems that could occur. The jdm engines are faster but the swaps have more potential for something to go wrong.
i paid 1700 for my car and 500 for an extra parts car.
all together your lookin at 4000 + 2500 + 1500 = more than it would be to just buy a turbo in the first place.
^ that what I mean.
You can buy a manual turbo, why do the swap on an auto NA?
A V6 is a good swap if you can pull it off.
Instead of spending time and effort to make the car run like a stock manual turbo, you can get a stock manual turbo and spend time and effort to make it better.

Thanks i see what your talking about now. time to go shopping
if u plan on doing any type of modding in the future...start off with a turbo..save yourself all the headaches....good luck on your search for an mr2....
Do like MRQturbo said"get the turbo" and save yourself the headache, all the work, unforseen problems, time and money. and BTW, 7-10k for a 2nd generation turbo is way too much...
^ Certain areas sell MR2's for MUCH more than Cali. I see MR2's listed reallly high out of California and they get bought up right away. They are pretty rare in some parts of the country. Rare here too... but not 10k rare.
