Smoking problem, HELP!!
I bought a 91 MR2 Turbo about 6 months ago. I had the engine partially rebuilt and drove it for about 600 miles. It ran great, no problems with the engine. The only problem with the car was that it had a bad turbo. It leaked oil in the air intake and intercooler. The shaft had lots of play in it and it smoke a little bit more than it should have from the exhaust. So I bought a used/rebuilt turbo on ebay. It is a stock ct-26 just like the one in mine. It had no shaft play and looked clean from the outside. I then removed my old ct-26 and had a mechanic install my new one from ebay. I did not have a few bolts that I needed to secure the turbo to the exhaust manifold so I could not test it out when the mechanic was around. The day after I got the 6 bolts and secured the turbo to the manifold, not a big deal to do. But when I tried to start the car it began smoking badly from the exhaust. It looked like white/grey smoke. It took about 4 seconds to begin to smoke and after about 30 seconds the smoke either entered the engine bay or started smoking somewhere in the engine bay. The smoke smelled like something burning. Like a dry burning smell. I did not drive the car at all. I did take a few pics if needed. Does this sound like a bad turbo? Whet else would cause this? If the Turbo is causing this, can it harm the engine? Thank you all!!
