Do I need struts too?

I found a set of Tein springs for pretty cheap and will probably get them. I've heard that with lowering springs, you should get new struts to match. I need new susp. anyway, but can't afford struts right now. How does the car behave with stock struts, but different springs? Can I go ahead and get the springs installed, or should I wait for struts. (It's gonna be awhile) I'm gonna get the springs now regardless, but want to know what you guys think I should do. Thanks!!

get the struts if yours are wornout. the springs installed without the new struts will still give you about the same ride you're getting now. are u installing yourself or a tech doin' it ? either way, it would be less time/money to do it all at once. it's about 4 hrs labor for a tech @avg $65.00/hr. http://members.cardomain.com/mr2bad

If you do not get the struts, you run the risk of the new lower/harsher springs causing your current struts to fail. In that case, you end up paying the labor to install them twice. It just makes sense to do them while you are in there.

I run the KYB 4-ways for $85/per strut @ summitracing.com.
A lot of MR2 owners prefer the Tokiko 5-ways (a bit more $$ though).
The KYBs are stiffer than the Tokikos.

What should I look for when getting the struts? I don't really care about extreme performance or anything, just reasonable comfort. Is there a more affordable brand I could get? My free mechanic, aka Dad, is probably going to do the work, so that isn't a problem. How do I know what kind to get? The springs are Tein s-type. Thanks for the help, I know NOTHING about this crap!

I'm using the same struts as Dr. J (KYB 4way)and I don't think they cost anymore(probably less) than the OEM. and they do offer versatility since they are 4 way adjustables.you can get a comfortable "street " ride on setting #1. I use #2 for a little stiffer ride for flatline cornering. I also paid close to the same $ as Dr. J off of Ebay..

i was looking to get a set of the tein s-techs and either the tokicos or the kyb-agx. i was leaning towards the tokico b/c i have heard the kyb's quality aint so great (in general...not specific to the mr2). any problems with them? i have a set of the tokico on my other car and dont think they are anything special. if they are about equal i would just get the kyb and put the $100 diff towards the install. any opinions would be great. thanks.

I have only used the KYB 4ways and they have been trouble free. as for performance, they're great! and easy to change the setting. the adjuster is right on the top of the struts. the fronts use a small screw driver to adjust. takes about 10 secounds per. and the rear have a knob with numbers that you just depress and turn to desired setting. takes only seconds to do.just alittle info . hope it helps you in your decision..

Rent or buy a spring compressor and do it yourself.( http://mytoolstore.com/toolaid/suspn01.html just an example and some pics. You dont have to buy these). Be sure to FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS though. If you dont have any instructions you can find some. Dont rush either. My friend almost lost his face because of not paying attention. http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl921f.htm
