Explain your situation a little better and we could probably help you out more. Sounds like you are buying a NA MR2 but you are looking for engine options. I'm assuming you are scraping the idea of a 3sgte because you saw that a Celica 3sgte is cheaper than a MR2 3sgte? If you really wanted to I'm sure you could get a 5sfe engine and tranny for pretty cheap.... I tossed mine actually. A better NA option would be the 3sge.... you can pick those up for pretty cheap also.
How much do you have to spend on this project you are getting?
Do you already have the car or is the sale pending?

Ok here's the deal... I'm looking to buy the car. It is a n/a mr2. It has a rebuilt engine with 36000 miles on it. But it has several problems... Exhaust leak or something, t-tops leak, tranny is shot... but I still want it because I have always wanted an mr2... Since the 3sgte is so expensive, I figured that I would take my chances replacing the engine and tranny and supercharge or turbo the engine later. I only have a part time job a walmart and I will have to pay the insurance and the rest of the money is for the car.
Part time jobs and MR2s don't go together. I've had mine 6 years and only have rims, intake, and exhaust.(gettin' springs soon!!!). If you want turbo power, save and get a turbo, I'm sure it's worth the wait. If you don't need big power and want something fun to drive, go ahead and get the n/a. Unless you're getting a really good deal on this car, you might want to look elsewhere, sounds like a lot of work needs to be done. (but pretty much everybody's t-tops leak)
T-tops seem to always be leaking (thats why sunroofs are better.... .) Where is the exhaust leak? Don't toss the engine with a new rebuild.... just get a new tranny. Simple as that. You are looking at maybe $300 worth of stuff depending on what it is and if you do it yourself or not.
BTW: When I said where is the exhaust leak.... I was kinda wondering what kind of leak it was? Could be as simple as a gasket.... or something like the manifold being cracked.

he is selling the car for $2200... the leak was around the exhaust flange... and the tranny I priced was $750 plus shipping...

I know I probably won't be looking at a turbo until I graduate from college... and the mr2 will already come with a HKS intake and Hotshot exhaust... but the exhaust will probably be changed

Friend of mine just got a used tranny for $125. Don't look for new parts for your 14 year old car at the dealership.... prices are rediculous. Like I said.... I tossed my tranny in excellent condition. Not because I could get ANYTHING for it.... just I was living in an apartment at the time and had NO place to put it.
Just to clarify the situation with the car... here is the owner's report
1993 na. 5speed. AC. Ttops. Rebuilt title. Ive owned the car for 3years. Has a rebuilt motor with less than 36000 miles. Hotshot exhaust. Timing belt has less than 13000 miles on. Act clutch. Body is in great shape. Tires wear evenly. Car tracks straight. Good tires on the car with less than 15000 miles on them. Kyb suspension front and rear. Adjustables in the rear.Trd short shifter. I have the stock one as well if you want to go back. Idle will ocasionaly creep up 500 rpms. Possibly a vacuum leak. I love the car but need something with 4 seats. Small exhaust leak between where secondary exhast meets mffler. So it needs an exhaust flange gasket replaced. When i bought the car it had 125000 miles. I replaced the engine because i thought i had poor compression. It was a bad fuel injector that would open and close depending on how hot the car got. Well all thats fixed. This car needs transmission work. It gets about 29 mpg. The car really is fun to drive but i need something bigger. Oh if your wondering if the car has sufffered from the rebuilt title. The answer is no.I will truely miss this car. Oh yeah Its got hks intake. The radiator was serviced about 2 years ago. The car runs at normal operating temp. The only thing that doesnt work is the cruise control. The drives side bolster of seat is worn through. No wear 0n the passenger seat. And like all mr2 the tops do leak but is tollerable. Im in south mississippi . Very close to neworleans. Also has new tie rod ends from toyota. Ps i bought the car knowing it was rebuilt. I have pics of what was repaired and have not regretted the purchase.Compresion check 201, 198,198 and 198. This car has an oil leak coming from the pan. The car runs great but the tranny is shot. It need to come out to be serviced. Also a good possibility throwout bearing is bad.I think the only other thing is a runner in the winsheild.I priced a new tranny from toyota for 1850 shipped. If no answer by phone email me. I will respond to email!
I have no idea what this means. It doesn't really look too good for me now as far as getting this mr2 goes. I think that I may just have to wait a while and see if something else good comes along. But I will have my mr2 soon I won't settle for any other car.

i disagree lol, it all depends on his money managing skill and how willing his is to make sacrifices for this to work. I'm in college and only make about 100 bucks a week, a little more. And I just finished paying all the money i owed on my car. I'm still getting a mr2 turbo some time soon, by summer at the latest. If he gets a loan, he can make payments till the summer then get a full time job. That's what I'm doing. Carpentry baby
