for the past week my car has been acting funny or so i think it is... after i floor it, it reaches around 10 or 11 psi and once it gets up to like 4k plus rpm my engine sounds completely different... i cant hear the turbo spool anymore at all... around that i can hear my car hit lift or vtec... the car only had 47k miles on it(entire car)... it was bought from an exotic car collector... ive had the car for over a year now... if it will help ill even list the mods done to it... apexi intake/defi boost gauge/hks turbo timer/apexi n1 exhaust/apexi bov/trd spark plug wires/trd short throw/hks fcd
well its not that i dont hear the turbo its just that my engine sounds completely different like an NA and my boost goes down... its a 91... someone told me to check for boost leaks i guess it doesnt hurt to check... the only other reason that i can think of is that im going out of the ct26's rpm band...
well i just did what your thinking. i found a '92 na. body in great shape. engine had 150k+ with a lot of hesitation. he was asking $3k. i knew i could get a 3sgte for around $3500 (engine/trans/lsd + install). i was getting frustrated trying to find a mr2 turbo for like $6-7k. all of them seemed to have like 120k+ miles in my area (eastern PA). i figured this way i would get a better car (body wise) with a better engine (lower mileage). my t-tops also leaked. when i got it home and started really going over everything i found the leaking t-tops led to some other problems (audio essentiall shot). then the brakes needed work (evil dealership **cough** sloane **cough**). lets just say i am glad i am done with college AND have my primary car paid AND have my student loans paid. i definitely would be in a world of hurt if i was only working part-time and paying for school. mr2s are great reliable cars but once something goes wrong, repairs go up FAST. i would stick with something newer until you have a full-time job. put it this way ...
$3k for car
$3500 for engine swap
$100 for used jdm door panels (driver-side had hole where elbow rests)
$200 for used jdm seats (driver-side badly worn, passenger-side had too many water stains)
$250 trd front/rear sway bars (original bushings shot)
$800 kyb-agx shocks, tein springs + install
$550 15" TSW rims/nitto tires b/c orig tires mismatched (not noticed till afterward) and unidirectionally the wrong way, also need for turbo brake upgrade with swap
$350 front brake job (bottom slides on both sides seized)
and this doesnt even include prob the $300 or so to get the audio sorted out and up to adequate levels. thats a ton of money on an old used car. personally i would go buy something decent just to get thru college and then get the mr2.
ok... I thought my computer went crazy... all I can say is if your losing boost check for a leak. maybe the pressure is too great for some of your grommets once you hit a cirtain psi.
well ya... i was only saying vtec and lift to describe what it sounded like when i floored it... right when i step on the gas all the way to the floor i hit 11psi around 3k rpm but around 4k or 5k i checked my boost gauge and my psi went down to like 7psi and i couldnt hear my turbo at all... all i could hear was my motor....
