I'm working a 6054 (sealed-beam) to H4 (replaceable bulb capsules) headlight conversion for my 1991 MR2 Turbo. (The H4 conversion is essentially just getting a housing that lets you put in replaceable H4 bulbs.)
I'm trying to determine if I need to purchase an upgraded aftermarket H4 wiring harness with relays, or if I will be able to get away using the stock wires.
What the highest wattage H4 bulb that you guys/gals have safely used with the OEM headlight wiring harness?
Or...
Could someone tell me what the gauge and length of the wires are for the OEM headlamp harness? (I haven't had a chance to look at them yet.)
I expect that the bulbs will draw about 3.5 amps based on what I have seen for similar rated bulbs, and was concerned about having heating issues due to the resistance that might be present in smaller OEM wires.
The bulbs are H4's with 90w Low Beams /&/ 100w High Beams.
Thanks so much in advance!
Later,
Brandon Mendez

as a general rule of thumb if you use stock fuses on stock wires the fuses go before the wires (point of a fuse) so if you want to use 100w bulbs you would need a system rated at 100w running P=I*V(watts=current*voltage) => I=P/V => 100/12=8.3 amps...but that doesnt make sense 100w bulbs pull more than 40amps...not sure but if you go more than 50w i would recomend replacing wires

Well I bought an H4 conversion kit and installed it last year. Got Pia Hyper white bulbs as well. After a month or so, my passenger side headlight went dim. Bought new bulbs, but it didn't make a diff. I then thought it might be a bad ground, so I checked them. All was good. So I finally bought a new wiring harness this past summer, but never got around to installing it. A new harness and relays should do the trick. Oh and installation will be quite a task. If you are not electrical savy, don't attempt it hahaha.
Oh, I can't remember the wattage that my bulbs aree rated, but they are a little over 100w. I want to say 120w.
I'm not sure if this has happened to everyone, but I just wanted to give you an example.
i used the stock harness still.....H4 conversion with CATZ bulbs....haven't had any problems yet either....i think they are 100W...
Awesome, thats nice to hear! Yeah, I think my bulbs are going to be pretty illegal... (9500k) not to mention I think they are going to be a really bright light-violet color. (Hopefully doesn't look too ghey.)
Also, have you guys seen those 6054-to-H4 headlights with 'angel eyes' before (in person?) I hope they don't look to cheesy because I just ordered a pair.
I had the violet color as well since it came with the kit I bought. They didn't look bad at all, but I still preferred Hyper white or blue. I bought Hyper whites within a few days. I've seen angel eyes on a lowered chevy s10. It has pretty much the same headlight shape as our mr2. I didn't care for them that much. It looks good on circular headlights(bmw's), but not on square headlights. This is just my opinion, you may feel differently. It's your car, and if you're happy with it, then don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Did u not read what i said???? EBAY. Most conversions will come with bulbs as well.
Or you can just go to a local store like pepboys or advance autoparts and buy it.
