Australia New to MR2

Hey guys,

Just about to finish the sale of my MX5.

I am looking at a MR2 for my next car, since its turbo and targa top, once you go drop top you don't go back :P. Just looking for some tips on the best model MR2 to purchase and what to look out for.

I have aroun 15,000 AUS to play with, I have been told the the 94 + models have a little bit more poke to them and are a little more refined.... is this true ?

Cheers

the 91-92 models have around 220hp from the crank and the 93+ have 245hp from the crank... mr2's dont come in targa top they come in T-top and sunroof/moonroof... the only diff between the 93 and the 94+ is the wing and the tail lights.... but the 93+ also have a lip and bigger wheels than the 91-92

if you try to find a picture of a T-top and a targa you will know the difference... with targa the whole roof is removable and in one piece.... here is the list of differences between the 91-92 and 93+ from the mr2oc.com

by david:
- MAP sensor instead of AFM
- Bosch D-Jetronic (Gen III) vs. L-Jetronic (relatively primitive) engine management
- CT20b turbo replaces CT26
- Boost raised from 10psi to 13psi
- Fuel cut raised from 12 psi to 18 psi
- Different ECU
- 4 wire O2 sensor
- Shim under bucket valve shims
- slightly more aggressive cams
- Revised internals (pistons, con-rods etc.)
- Revised cylinder head cooling passages/water jackets
- Revised intake manifold (8 'independent long ports' reduced to 4)
- intake manifold inlet air temperature sensor added. i.e. after turbo and intercooler.
- Revised gearbox with close ratio gearing
- lower compression ratio
- stainless steel head gasket
- factory 540cc injectors replace 430cc injectors
- revised fuel rail with bigger bore and relocated pressure regulator
- TVIS eliminated
- EGR eliminated
- LSD in 80% of them
- throttle body increased from 55mm to 60mm
- inlet valve lift increased from 8.2 to 8.7
- intake manifold inlet air temperature sensor added
- Less restrictive exhaust elbow
- Aluminum oil pan
- more rigid alloy sump and additional oil baffles
- Factory Catch can
- Better Oil Cooler and relocated oil filter (bottom)
- 4 Channel ABS coupled with Traction Control available
- No. 1 compression ring described as 'stainless steel' instead of just 'steel'. Oil ring is described as 'stainless steel' instead of 'a combination of steel and stainless steel'.

^ Those are differences between the Gen3 and Gen2 motors.

The 94+ had different lip, taillights, wing, wheels and brakes. There is no targa MR2.... there is a Hardtop, Sunroof and T-top.

Ok well after going drop top I don't want a hard top or even sun roof, I will only settle for T -Top which isn't really what I want but I guess it will do.....

So it is possible to get a 93 T-Top ?

most mr2's come in T-Top... its bascially rare to see or find a hard top... they do however have a convertable MKII mr2... in 1996 they produced 97 of them heres a link... i doubt you'd find one for sale though =P
