Which engine do you have?

It could be a lot things ... clooged fuel filter/injector, vac leak in the intake, idle needs to be adjusted, lots of stuff.

If you have a turbo MR2 with an aftermarket BOV, I would look there first.

opps sori.. i have the jdm 3sgte.. yes i hav an aftermarket BOV vented to the atmosphere but this didnt happen before, even with the open BOV.. maybe il try cleaning the injectors.. i had a problem before, the engine would just die down like i runs out of gas. the problem was a faulty wirring of the fuel pump, then after few weeks, this comes up..

Make sure the BOV is not stuck open at idle ... even just a little bit.

The AFM has 2 little screws on the side of it. You never touched those did you?

I would not bother cleaning the AFM. If you do, be very careful and do NOT touch those little screws!

How old is your air filter? Maybe the engine can't breathe?
How old is your ignition? (cap, rotor, wires and plugs)? There is a date painted on the wires ... what is it?

I never noticed there was a date on the plug wires. what is the life expectancy of them?

I replace my cap, rotor and wires once a year.
Some people say that is obessive.
I say I know my ignition is fresh.

Turbo MR2s with worn ignition components have been dynoed to be down as much as 35 rwhp!

The ignition pieces will last longer than a year. It really depends on your driving and your power level. I just do it to be safe.

yeah , the toyota parts guys always give me a hard time when I ask for cap and rotor.."why do you need that? they last forever".. sorry but I can see a little pitting on the pick ups and end of rotor. so I change them...
