I already got me a 1993 camry with the 5sfe engine, looking to buy another 5sfe-equipped toyota, and I'm fustrated by what seems like a lack of significant performance upgrades for cars with this engine. I don't know of the legality of trying to import me a 3sgte engine from japan and I feel like this would be the best and possibly the cheapest solution. Anyways, since a lot of you mr2 guys have 5sfe-equipped (or originally equipped) cars, what CA legal performance upgrades would work out good, and pleeeeeeeeeeeze don't tell me to get an intake.
Nothing really. Intake, exhaust, headers and cams. Can't really do anything but the exhaust and a CARB legal intake.... you could probably get away with the cams though. I think max whp on a 5sfe was like 135whp
no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, no intake, I don't like intakes they are a pet peeve, I'm sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good idea with the cams, I'm more into engine transplant though than improving the 5sfe because my theory is you can put all the makeup on pig you want, but no matter how pretty it is it is still a pig!!
likely something else, this is gonna be for mountain roads and I hear that the handling of the mr2 can be tricky at its limits with a tendancy to fishtail.....I'm thinking about a 94-99 celica or something
5sfe is a fustrating little thing, and those (expletive) forced induction companies that do make blowers for 'em won't certify them in california!!
I like the way the gen6's look, I'm not into any other model by any stretch of the imagination, except maybe the gen4's. I believe that 2.5&3.0(1mzfe)v6s will compromise the handling of the car negating my purpose for buying it in the first place. I just don't know, I wanna do an engine transplant....
If you're talking strictly legal, then head and cam modification isn't legal. It's easy to get away with though.
Opening up the head is usually a good idea, while also enhancing the flow of the exhaust with headers. You can make the headers legal if it has all of the factory emissions equipment intact. It'd be easier if the headers weren't all blinged out too, since an OEM look will attract less attention. A port and polish, cam regrind, and OS valves would all complement the 5S. As long as you keep the 2 cats and 2 O2 sensors in place, it should pass smog with flying colors.
knowing me, for all I know they gonna dismantle my shit looking for an excuse to f___ with me. What is the possibility of importing a 3sgte from japan and getting it approved?

Add EGR and you are good to go. If you think a 1mz will comprimze the handling..... you realize the 3sgte weighs more.
the 1mzfe equipped gen3.5 camry is lumbering and unsporty compared to my otherwise identical 5sfe gen3. it only weighs ~100 pounds more, but I guess that's critical.
no pleeeeeeeeeeze no intake, come on guy I really don't like intakes on four bangers!!!! If only they weren't so f___ing loud, i can't stand them!!!! they are a pet peeeve!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been spoiled by owning a 8.2liter v8 car with a sweet sounding engine, I can't stand intake-ed cars, ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
