I have passed in Mass. without the secondary cat on my '91 turbo for the last 3 years. But I don't know how I would fair without the primary cat.

haha, just get a fail and go back six months later, then get another fail, go six months later...my friend did this and eventually they just passed him.

or you can get a waiver if you car is low enough. That's what the guy did for me atleast not like I have to worry about it though. This mr2 I might be getting hopefully is low enough cuz I doubt it'll pass w/ dp and gutted cat and exhaust?

When you guys say the primary cat, you're talking about the second one in the exhaust stream, right? The first one is not usually called the primary cat.

I am going to remove the first cat from my 93T and it's been gone from my 96 turbo Camry for a while. But we are now getting emissions beginning in April in New Hampshire. So this will be interesting.

The first one is the primary cat. The cat near the muffler is the California emissions secondary cat. The secondary cat alone isn't big enough to filter all of the emissions.

Ya know...I kind of knew that as I was writing my post. My primary cat has been gone from my Camry for a long time. The MR2 one is about to go. And we have new emissions coming up in NH...oh joy

here in tennessee only cirtain counties have the emissions test..... and unfortunately mine does. I plan on running a strait shot from the turbo to the muffler on my 5sfe... but if it won't pass I have ways around it. for example: on my '86 subaru gl 1.8 turbo (designated as my rally machine) I would simply get my '65 porsche 912 registered.... it's so old that it doesn't require an emissions test... then go pay an additional $6 to have the plates and registration swapped from the porsche to the subaru.... and then I have a year of street-legal rally ahead of me! just remember.. there is always a loop hole

I've went to have my car tested without both cats (I had a straight pipe) and Hydrocarbon level was too high, and that's basically what the smog test does. I then went to have a performace flow cat install where the secondary one is and it passed with flying colors. The Hydrocarbon level was so low compare to no cats.

What brand was the performance cat you had installed? I replaced both of my converters in the Camry with one Magnaflow high performance cat.

mr355msfte in mass every inspection sticker is bar coded so they have everything, and when you reregister a car you have to get a new sticker. Good news smog test every 2 years.
