Need some info.. ToTURBO a 5sfe motor

Hi, my neighbor wants to sell his 1991 mr2. It is the non-turbo version. I believe it's the 5sfe engine correct? It has 114,000 miles on it. I want to turbocharge it. I have no clue when it comes to what parts I need to make this happen. Can someone please help me out! Also, how should I offer to buy the car from him? Thanks

if you have no clue the easiest way is to get a kit from bruien or somewhere.. but it WILL involve lots of custom pipe work, oil lines, wiring relocation etc... not advised if youre not a guru

why don't you just swap the motor ? it might = to the cost of a turbo kit.

Ok, I did a little research and now I have a few more questions. Apparently, a 3sgte engine swap is a common thing for NA mr2 owners. Now I've noticed there is a few different types. There's the 3sgte, 3sge, 5sgte, 5sge(?), etc. I want something that's an easy swap into the mkII. If I do an engine swap, might as well upgrade some of the engine parts while the engine is off the car right? So what other upgrades would you recommend (flywheel, clutch, cams, etc.) for the engine without really getting into the internals (pistons, rods, etc.). Cause I'm afraid to touch the internals of an engine, but I can do cams and flywheels. Oh yeah, and what's the cheapest power to MONEY alternative .

for your situation, I'll be honest and advise the 3sgte swap.... only because I know it's alot more cost efficient in its power \ installation time ratio...... but in the back of my head I wanted you to bite the bullet and join the insane asylum with the rest of us turboing our 5sfe's.

I would change water pump, timing belt, head gasket, and all belts, hoses just to be in the safe side first. As for mods flywheel, clutch, camshaft, camgear, upgrade intake pipes, air filter, intercooler, MBC, exhaust pipes. port and clipe the turbo, port out the manifold, o2 housing. it all goes how deep is your pockets or wallets

I just got back from a shop here in town. The guy told me the wiring harness was going to be a problem if I wanted to convert to the 3sgte. He said you have to splice wires and know exactly which is what.

If I get a 2nd or 3rd gen 3sgte engine, tranny, ECU, and wiring harness, is the everything (including the wiring) just plug and play throughout the sw20 body? Or would I still need to splice wires and modify stuff around?

Also, when you swap an engine in an sw20, do you swap it through the top of the car or from underneath the car? If I do this swap, it will be my first engine swap. I have a good set of tools and jacks. Everything but a big hydraulic jack that actually raises the entire car above your head. Any suggestions?

Sorry for all the questions but there's just so much to know!
