USA 92 MR2. Automatic tranny. Forward gears fine but reverse gear is very slow...

Found an ad selling a 92 MR2 which is in great shape, new tune up and tires. The only problem the seller states that the Reverse gear is very slow and that the forward gears are perfect. What could be the problem?? He is asking $800 for the car and thinking of buying it for parts or to make it run good again. Any suggestions

a '92 in great shape for $800.... sounds like he got the problem checked out and didn't like the diagnosis....

but then again who needs to go fast in revers? go check the car out, drive it... and see how it feels...

if you can ask if it is an auto or manual.. and exactly how slow it is in reverse.

I called the guy last night and today and it seems as if hes got his hands tied. He told me there are a lot of people wanting to look at the car. What im planning to do is, if i do buy the car, swap the engine and tranny and buy a JDM turbo and put that in and make it nice. I could prob lower the price down to $600 or even $500 is I bring some cash, Thats if I like the car and it has a clean history

Im going to look at the car tonite and hopefully all goes good and so I have a project to work on. If it is indeed the tranny that needs to be replaced, can I use one that came out of a Camry? But the prob is the FWD to RWD difference. Does this matter. Im also looking into a JDM turbo or a V6 Swap.

Just came back from looking at that MR2. Definelty needs a new tranny and body is in rough shape although paint is not faded. Engine is perfect with 158k miles but no wierd noises or smoke at all. Tranny will not go into 4th gear and reverse is indeed slow. Interior will need a good cleaning. This is a great parts car. Anyone interested, I can give you the guys number. Brake pedal all the way to the floor and NO fluid in the resovoir tank although the guy mentioned doing some brake work. Car stops but very dangerous to drive.
