What's up guys? i have a few questions about just throwing a turbo on my na mr2. i plan on using a td04 turbo, im going to have custom turbo manifold, intake manifold, turbo mr2 fuel rail and injectors, walboro fuel pump. well the questions are: is the 5sfe head effecient with air flow for a turbo? what ecu should i use? where can i get a thicker head gasket? or better yet just throw some ideas or problems with this setup. and yes i know i wont be able to boost to high becuase of the high compression. and i just want this setup to last me from until the summer, where i will swap a v6 turbo motor. thanks for any insight and help.
well the problem is, i already bought the parts and i just dont want to leave them around, or being unused. so i figured i can put them to use then sell them during the summer. i just want something quicker then a na mr2. but thanks for your opinion. come on i need more insight asap.
I do have to say, that's one of the most rediculous things I've heard. Why not sell the parts now and get a better price for them? Save your money for your "real" project? Why risk blowing your 5s engine when you can get another $150 or so from selling it? Winter is just about over, suck it up and save your money. Besides, installing a turbo on a 5s has proved to be a risky and very costly project. Do a search on this forum, or go to the mr2 owner's club website and do a search. There should be plenty of info about the subject on the two websites. You asked for insight and 3 people so far advise against turbo charging a 5s, but then again, it's your money.
"is the 5sfe head effecient with air flow for a turbo"
No. It's a fuel economy head, not a performance head.
As the others have said, if you are planning on doing an engine swap in a few months, you are going to potential destroying other parts that have value.
I would never suggest boosting the 5SFE engine.
i dont see how your plan is gonna work....u want to get your 5SFE turbo project up and going before summer...when you will swap it out for an even bigger project.....a v6 swap and turbo.......
sell what you already have bought...if u really want something faster than an NA Mr2...do the easiest thing.....get a turbo mr2...will save you so much time..money..headaches....etc.....in the long run....
hmm...... I'm stuck between telling you the truth and saying the first thing that popped into my head. truth: turbo + v6 = crazy power, and possibly a fitment problem (not to mention and all the other componets you'll need for the swap... ie. axles, ecu, harness, fully custom-made exhaust, mounts, crossmember)
my first thought: go for the turbo 5s... be different.. the 5s head IS economical... give it a P&P, 3 angle valve job, and send it on it's way.... or simply swap it for a 3sgte head, harness, ecu.... but if you do turbo your 5s... be sure to keep the boost low, or build the internals....

about the v6 turbo, im still looking on how im going to mount the turbo, but im thinking somewhere slightly over the transaxle, im still weighing out my options. well this summer im prepared to start the v6 turbo mr2, i was possibly thinking making it a six speed, using a celica tranny but that is just a thought thrown around. yes im aware of the project, lots of headaches, lots of trouble, lots of money, but worth it in the end. im prepared to throw what ever time and money that is needed for this project since im going to complete it.
about the 5sfe turbo motor, thanks alot for the faith; i am going to turbo the motor. im aware of the keeping the boost low bc of the high compression. i also own a na 3000gt and i was looking to turbo that and i got into alot of discussions with mechanics and i visited alot of forums. turns out a fwd t turbo 3000gt is faster on roll than a vr4. the compression on a 3000gt is 10:1 or 11:1 which both are really high. that is y i have hi hopes for this 5sfe turbo. thanks alot for your insight and ill let you guys know how it goes.
i've been thinking about getting an n/a mr2 (cause i don't have the $$$ for a turbo right now). i'm also more familiar with the 5sfe than the 3sgte. why can't you get a head from a 3sgte and use that? i remember reading (i think it was wraith) that on the earlier 5s's (i wanna say 90-93) that the water passages line up. other than that, you'd need a 3sgte exhaust manifold and a turbo of your choice. of course, i know i'm missing a LOT of other stuff that goes along with turbos, but does this sound like an unreasonable project?
btw, i think trying to turbo anything with a fe head is asking for trouble from what i've read, but good luck with whatever you do.
