Question parts availability in the states

ok, heres the situation... i have been planning on putting a japanese gen. 3 3S in my mr2 until just recently when i read a thread (right here in toyota nation) about the unavailability of the parts for the third generation. If i recall correctly, the second generation japanese 3SGTE has parts that are compatible with the 3S here in the states..... is that true? are there any parts that are exclusive to the second generation and that would be a problem to get ahold of?

The second gen engines are the same between the countries as far as I know.
I am not aware of any benefit to having a "jspec" gen II ... other than being able to say you have a "jspec" gen II

Why not just get a USDM engine?

Yes, the JEM 3SGTE has 200 ponies and the JDM has 225.... but what constitutes the difference in power? As far as the USDM 3S is concerned, does anyone know the price of that engine/transmission/crossmember/ecu/axles combo? I was looking at 2500 for the jap gen 2 clip....

IIRC, the additional power came from a more aggressive ECU since they have a higher octane fuel over there and they do not expect engines to last nearly as long as we do. The replace engines by 50K miles for emissions reasons.

Drifting Dane, do you have an NA and are looking to swap?
Unless you are completely in love with your particular MR2 or you have a lot invested in it, you may find it better & easier to sell and buy a turbo MR2.
I am personally not into swaps, unless you are doing something that you could not buy (like a V6 MR2). If you can buy it, buy it. Your swap will never be as good as the Toyota build real-deal.

You may find some helpful information at www.paautoracing.com.
Talk to Dave there and tell him I sent you.
He specialize in clips & swaps.

Yes, i have an NA, but it is out of comission in its current state. The only problem with selling my car and purchasing a new turbo is that nobody would buy my car. If you remember, i threw a connecting rod through my block (?!).

I could part it out, but what could i honestly expect from my car? a grand? Ive looked on ebaymotors, and the only decent turbos are going for almost five grand, and the auction isnt done yet. According to Dave, a gen 2 swap will cost about four grand, all said and done. I have about a grand invested in my nonworking MR2, so it seems that a swap is my best option.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for the help.
