Charcoal Canister

Searched, and couldn't find anything. Maybe I'm just stupid with the search function. But what exactly does the charcoal canister do, and I read a post by J&H that mentioned something about removing it causing a gas smell. Any benefits to removing it, or is it a necessary part of the car?

Basically, it stores fuel vapors fr the tank to be burned later during closed loop condition. Thermal valve allows purging. How much would depend on load and throttle position. There is no benefit to removing it whatsoever. Let me guess, you want to free up some room in the engine bay.

DriftingDane, I am talking about the charcoal canister in the engine bay. The black cylinder with the two hoses running into the top of it. And yes, I would like to free up some space in the engine bay. The two hoses into the canister, what are they? And I was told by someone that I have to do something like put a breather filter on one of them if I were to remove it? The previous questions are more for a better understanding of my car. Thanks for the replies.

Another reason I am asking is because it makes a weird rattling noise, even if the car is completely off and has been sitting for a while. Any ideas on that one?

The buzzing noises are completely normal. As Monkey pointed out, most people that remove them are just trying to make space in the engine bay and/or lose some weight.

I took mine out a few days ago, cleaned it up and painted it. it seemed to just be heavy and solid. I didn't hear anything rattling around. is it still good? do they ever need to be replaced? i have never heard of anyone doing that...

The people I bought the car from had only driven it for less than 400 miles in 4 years. Most of the time it was left sitting, which is why I have had to replace several systems due to rust and corrosion (includes cooling system, brakes and lines, warped manifold and several hoses). So I was wondering if it was something else that could go bad from just sitting around. And if it's bad, should I replace it or just save time and money and get rid of it?
