bad tranny synchro?

I've heard that the tranny sychros often wear out or go bad in the MR2. My '91 N/A does not seem to want to downshift into second without me rev-matching to around 4 1/2 - 5k or more, else I get a wicked grind. Is this possibly a synchro issue? If so how much of a pain is it to fix this? I haven't changed the fluid yet so I may start with that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you are grinding gears, it is most likely the syncros.
Unfortunately, the tranny needs to be pulled and opened up to fix them.

I had the same problem when I got my '91 N/A that I could not downshift from 3rd to 2nd or even all time shift from 1st to 2nd with out hearing a little grinding sound. You said you have not changed the tranny fluid, that's what I did to fix my problem. I Put in Pennzoil Syncromesh I got it from Autozone for about 4 bucks a qt. I only put 1Qt of this stuff and the rest with regular tranny fluid, and my upshifts and downshifts are smooth now...

Using Syncromesh after your gears have already started to grind is a band aid. It will help get some more distance out of your tranny, but ultimately it is going to need to be replaced.

I highly recommend using a good tranny fluid right from the start. I use the Redline MTL. I have also used the GM Syncromesh. Both are a bit pricey at around $10/quart.
