I just got this car and the speedometer does not work. Everything else works like the tach fuel etc. I took the bezel out and the cable is connected. I checked the tranny and same thing, connected. I'm hoping it's a sensor of some kind because to change that wire looks like a pain in the rear. can anyone help?
'93 and up have electronic speed sensor. It's not that hard to replace.
Pre '93 has the mechanical spinning speedo cable. The rear one isn't too hard to replace, but the front can be a pain. If you have a pre '93, pull the cable off the tranny and check if the gear is spinning. If it is, it's one of the speedo cables. If it isn't, you probably need to replace the gear in the tranny. This happens quite often on the '91 and '92 MR2's.
Hope I could help.

i've noticed that when looking for mr2's for sale, a lot of them had a problem w/ the speedo cable not working. Atleast 2 or 3 of them have been like this so that could and "probably" is your problem. Let us know how it goes

Ok. I took the cable out and started to toy around with the cable and the base or sensor, and when I started driving, it worked somehow BUT, all is not done because the needle bounces. It does not look like it's stable, so, when I wake up later 2day, I'm gonna unscrew it and screw it back in as tight as I could to see if that will do it. If not than I guess I'll be reading from you again.
It is fairly common for the 91/92s to breakthe gear inside the tranny.
A word of warning on buying used MR2s with broken speedos ... you will not know how many miles are really on the car.
that goes for any car with a mechanically driven speedometer..... the odometer will also not register.... my corolla's original gauges have about 400 unaccounted miles on them

The part itself is relatively inexpensive, I think. It's pulling the tranny and breaking it apart that's the pain in the butt. At this point, you might as well rebuild it. I ran into this same problem a while back. Instead, I just bought an LSD tranny!
A lot less headache, and did I mention it's LSD? You'll thank me later!

you can't get the gear out in a mk2? they have the e150 tranny, correct? i would assume they have the speedo drive gear in the same location as the e51 (sc mk1 tranny),..... it's a pain in the butt to get out, but you can (the gear and drive piece comes apart in 2 pieces and will slide out)
