what problems to look for in 88 SC'ed mr2?

Hey all, I'm new to the mr2 scene so please forgive me for any stupid questions. Are there any major problems the 1988 supercharged mr2's have? I found one with 160k miles for pretty cheap. It has a brand new supercharger in it. The tranny has been rebuilt as well. What should I be careful about with this year of mr2? Any adive? Also, here are some questions I'd like to know:

- how many lbs of boost does the S/C mr2 run at stock?
- how many pounds of boost can be used safely with the stock fuel system?
- how do you increase the boost in a S/C'ed engine? (I've owned turbo cars before, but I don't know if S/C'ed mr2's can use a MBC to control the boost)
- is the stock boost gauge in the mr2 fairly accurate?

Thanks!

Tanner

Is this from ebay?

It can go up to 14psi. Anything above that and you are just making heat.

Stock fuel system will handle 200hp+. To make more boost, change the crank pulley to a bigger one.

They never came with a stock boost guage, just a green LED light on the cluster that comes on when you are out of vaccum mode and in the boost kicking ass left and right.

you may just make sure that the coolant (Toyota red ONLY!!!) is done properly, check with the service intervals and note when, the t-belt was done last, make sure the drive belts are in good shape, if you do the t-belt, change the keyway also.

p.s. what's up, martin!?!? how are things looking for Kingston meet this year?! if i come, hope to see you there!

What octane gas does the 4AGZE require? Was 1988 the only year they made the supercharged mr2's of the mki generation? How hard is it to swap out a stock crank pulley for a cusco + supporting mods? About how long would it take? What could a 14psi 4AGZE run a 1/4th in? Thanks for all the help so far guys!

i ONLY use 93 and up in my 89 SC. they were made in 88 & 89
if you are capable of doing a timing belt on your MR2, then doing the pulley is 1/2 way there. as for supporting mods, depends on the route you take. i don't know about 1/4 mile...i don't do it...i'm a road racing-autocross snob. and @ 14 psi. many people complain about the inefficiency of the intercooler.

have heard that it is a good idea to keep an eye on the SC oil, running dry is NO BUENO! also heard the supra fuel pump is a direct bolt in and necessary with higher psi. may want to consider injector upgrade. toysport says watch out for 18+psi, not good for the rods.

What octane does Toyota reccomend? Here in CA we don't have 93 octane at the pump.

as high as possible. there is a fuel selector switch, but that retards timing (manually change the timing and keep it on 'high' octane)

LOL!!! hahahaha that was seriously funny!

also heard the supra fuel pump is a direct bolt in and necessary with higher psi.

not too necessary...how high are we talking?

may want to consider injector upgrade.
toysport well, there's a problem...
says watch out for 18+psi
now, how are you getting 18+psi on an SC??? are we still talking SC12 here? SC14? Whipple? which pulley would that be exactly? hmmm, by my estimations, you'd be using a CUSCO, NEVO, Diabolique, Boost Junkies, or E.L.Prototypes crank pulley -with- a Speedchaser pulley...hmmm, highly unlikely. sorry to rant here, but it just seems so inflated!!!

, not good for the rods.
man, i just don't know where your 'facts' are coming from...
but, seriously, the "No Bueno" thing...LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Is this octane switch on the dash?

Also, can some one get a carfax for me? I would greatly appreciate it. My email is Tanner007@comcast.net . The VIN # is jt2aw16j5j0144484 . Thanks.
