Alternator conversion

My batt. died on me sat. wENT TO THe j. yard and got an alternator from a 89 supra. Plugs were the same but didn't fit. So I went back and found one from a 96 camry. Identical except the wire plug. So I cut the wires, both have 3. Ok, all good except my batt still doesnt charge. My question is, there is a white, red and green wires, I think. Anyways do I match them color for color or did Toyota switch it up on me. Or can there be something wrong in my system....or did I pick out A dud from the j. yard. please ... need asst.
