problems wiht using an older block?

as long as i inspect and check walls and fluid channels any problems? reason im asking is that we are building our engine and we may break a rod so we would prefer not to punch a whole in a new block (like last time). Any problem with this plan? i found a guy a small distance from me thats selling a block with about 100k on it for $50...suggestions
thanks
-Alex

ps: our build is going to include
1-Pistons/rings
2-sport cams
3-port and polished (done in house)
4-the obivious (intake/exhaust)
considering:
possiblity of forced induction
forged crank
forged rods
any other things to think about?

i assume you're asking about 3 rib block vs. 7 rib.

what caused you to throw the rod?

if you are throwing rods, it might not be 'caused' by the three rib. i'd look at oiling or ignition/fuel, etc...

i don't see anything in your list of build-up that would 'cause' a 3 rib to fail. most problems are caused by the nut behind the wheel. also maybe the engine builder. if you are assembling this thing now, wouldn't it be wise to make the decision as to whether or not you will throw boost into the mix? seems to me the smart way to go seeing how compression becomes a factor.
