Gen 1 = 198x - 1989
Gen 2 = 1990 - 2000
Gen 3 = 2000 - ???

Usually when MKII's are refered to as 'gen 3's'... it is considered a 3rd gen 3sgte.

MkI 1983(non US)1985 (US)-1989
MkII 1991 (US)-1998(i think)
MkIII2001(US)-present

the 3rd Generation 3SGT-E didn't come in a MkIIT, they were usually swapped. that's my understanding anyway.

1ZZ
the Lotus Elise got the 2ZZ as did the Celica GT-S
the 2ZZ has VVTL-i
the 1ZZ has better bottom-end torque and is less peaky and only has VVT-i

so whats the deal?

MKI's came with a 4age and a 4agze.

MKII's came with a 5sfe (us), 3sgte (1st/2nd gen US, 1,2 and 3rd gen in JP) and the 3sge (JP).

MKIII's (aka.. MRS or Sypder, not to be confused with the MKII Sypder) came with the 1zz.... I dont think they ever came stock with a 2zz.... even in Japan.

There is also a 4th gen (or gen 3.5 some call it) 3sgte that came in the Caldina (JP).

i still don't see where you're getting another model, though.
the 4th gen is referring to the engine, not the car. Toyota afficianados use Mk or 'Mark' as referrence to the model. 'Gen' is usually a honduh or dsm or rx-7 thing.

Ok, well that right there clears everything up.I thought the JDM version that used the CT20 was another generation. especially since they stopped in the US in '95 and made them in japan for a few more years with different turbo/hp..duh,I've been out of crack for 3 days now !! thanks
